F28 BCM 3 fuse keeps blowing.

Hello all,

I recently had a fuse 28 blow and caused my driver-side bottom drl, my passenger side blinker, and my rear driver-side tail light to go out. Initially, I replaced it with a spare that is in my box, and that blew within a day or 2 so I figured the spare was just old. I went and bought some new ones put them in and it lasted about a week or so before it went out again. I really don't know what it could be. I looked at one of the fuse charts and it appears that the side markers are linked to those fuses. I do have aftermarket-led side markers but they have been in for over 6 months and this didn't start happening till a week or two ago. Otherwise, the only other aftermarket electronics I have is LED headlamps and an E85 sensor that isn't even tuned on yet. I did get hit in a parking lot 2 months ago on my front driver-side corner but the damage did not look like it would cause this and I didn't have this problem till a month and a half after. Any help is appreciated!

Unplug all the lights and put in a lower amperage fuse that will pop right away so you don't have to wait a week. If the fuse pops right away you have a wiring issue, if not plug the lights in one at a time until the fuse pops. I'm guessing you are going to find a wire rubbed/crushed near where the parking lot damage is.

What is the rating on fuse 28?
I agree with wildcat that this is probably a wire shorting intermittently, since it does not blow the fuse immediately.
If you had an ammeter, you could put that across the fuse terminals and have somebody else push or lightly tap the body panels in the suspect area.

It is a 15. And so unplug all lights? I guess this is the only way without taking it to a shop. Well this should be fun. The damage is very minimal where only the front driver side bumper cover corner has a dent. I don’t think anything is even really behind where the dent is, but if that is the case then atleast the other guys insurance will pay for it.

Above are some old threads. I think there is some weird path to ground through the trunk harness that may blow the fuse when you install LED's.

Or more more of the lights is shorting to ground.. fuse is protecting the car from burning to the ground or maybe just melt some shit n cause extensive damage.


My bet is cheap LED modules are failing from moisture /corrosion. Go back to stock bulbs or replace fuses regularly or find actual cause.

I would start with this idea. Try replacing the LED turn signal module first. That seems to be a trouble point in older threads.

Update: So the fuse blew again today after about 2 days. This time when I replaced the fuse it blew instantly. Also made the discover that when the fuse is out it also causes both the side markers on the driver side to go out as well. So i’m gonna assume it’s one of those 2. Going to try and take the front driver side one out and see becuase as of now it’s the only one I can get too.

Update Again: Yesterdsy I unplugged both side markers and did a bunch of testing and the fuse never blew so I left them unplugged and wrapped the ends in electrical tape. All for this morning on my drive to class the fuse blow. I’m very lost at what to do now. I have no leads as to what it could be but I don’t have the money for a shop. I can’t leave my car like this cus I don’t want to get pulled over at night.

Are you talking about F28 (BCM3) in the fuse block under the hood? I’m not a technician, but it looks like that fuse provides power to the BCM, and then the BCM has separate connections out to the individual light circuits. Your car may have a bad BCM. Have you tried to pull error codes with an OBD reader? Not all codes will trigger the MIL on the dashboard.

The tread below talks about BCM replacement. This might be something you have to get fixed by a dealer or professional mechanic. Not cheap, but the prices quoted in the thread weren’t horrendous either.

Thank you so much, all of you. It seems as though I am rather an idiot or an idiot. I bought my this past April and on a day trip to another state in June, my battery had died before our drive back. Come to find out my car still had the original factory battery nearly 8 years old. Luckily there were quite a few of us there so I went and bought a new battery real quick and I guess during my quick installation of the new battery I rather didn't tighten a nut down all the way or just missed it, but the extra ground wire that attaches to the main ground terminal to battery was dangling off behind the battery. I have now re-grounded it and going to assume that is what was causing the issue. I don't know why it would've taken a couple of months for it to finally blow but I do not know what else it could be.

This will just take time, if it happens again, you just need to inspect all the wires related to the affected area. I had to find a taillight issue in a 1967 firebird and it took a dozen or two hours before tracked it to a Painless fuse box that had reverse polarity from the factory on that ONE fuse.


It might be something simple you can fix with a quarter inch of electrical tape, just will take a while to find it.

Sad to say it Indeed blew again. Really unsure of what to do now. Called a couple shops and they told me they won’t even work on it. Also talked to a friend of a friend who is a GM mechanic and he said he doesn’t really know either and he thinks it could just be the BCM.
