Is this Lifter Tick?

Hi all,

Can’t tell if this is lifter tick or if I am being paranoid because this is the first oil change where I had to use 5w-30 instead of 0w-40 (Amazon sent me 0w-50 by mistake, but I didn’t find out until I drained the oil & then had to run to the store and buy some 5w-30 in the interim)the sound seems to be coming from passenger side, and is intermittent. Seems like it skips sometimes.

Had the car since new and never put anything other than 0w-40 and did changes religiously at 5k miles.

Car is a 2022 2SS Manual with 36k miles.

Is it always there, or only at idle. Does it stay in rhythm with rpm changes?

5w30 for street commute is fine, for best wear protection I'd shorten the OCI to 3k/mi. 0w40 isn't the holy grail of survivability for the LT series, plenty of oil reports show it wears down to a 30 grade before recommended OCI's, so running a 5w30 isn't going to cause mechanical failures out of nowhere. It's not to say 0w40 isn't a good oil grade. Not running it isn't the end of the world. The 0w50 would have ran just fine and provided great protection. You might have lost 1/2 a MPG or something, maybe. As long as the oil you put in meets or exceeds specs and fits your build, it'll run just fine.

Like SWFL asked, is it always ticking up and down the RPM or just at idle? Need a second body to slowly rev the engine up. It does sound pretty ticky but lots of stuff ticks under the hood. High pressure fuel injectors can tick some louder than others, headers/exhaust leaks can tick, but if you're still running AFM hardware I'm on the side of the fence that failure is a matter of "when" not "if". It's not worth being spooked every time you hear a noise, wondering if it's a dying lifter and you're about grenade your engine. But if you're still trying to keep your warranty, put it to use and let a dealer diagnose.

Take a 3' length of 1/2"garden hose and put one end to your valve covers and one to your best ear. Plug the other ear with swimmer's putty. You'll be amazed how well you can isolate lifter noise.
Also, Direct Injection makes a muted clicking noise.

Sounds like normal valvetrain noise to me.

Mine has sounded just like that since new. You're very likely good to go. The injectors and high pressure pump make some noise, which is likely what you're hearing there.

Sounds normal to me. I don’t think you have any problem.

That is a normal sound which I believe sounds like injector pump. I have a 2023 with 1250 miles and it does the same sound at cold start and goes away in about a minute and is from the exact same area as yours.

Did you ever get this checked out? Mine has had this tick since I bought it used earlier this year and wondering if it’s something I should worry about.
