Does gm tell you to change the rear end fluid at 1500 miles or is that something that owners do as a precaution?

After 1500 miles is the manufacturer's recommendation if you're going to track it

This is from the 2024 Camaro Owner's Manual:

"Axles must have 2 400 km (1,500 mi) before being used in track driving. The rear axle fluid temperatures may be higher than when driving in severe conditions. Drain and refill with new fluid after the first racing or competitive driving event, and then after every 24 hours of racing or competitive driving. See Recommended Fluids and Lubricants 0 302 (2024 Manual)"

GM recommends rear axle fluid replacement every 45,000 miles, the 1,500-mile diff fluid flush is owner precaution, because much of the initial wear can be gotten rid of with this simple step.

FYI this is the break-in procedure that GM specifies in their track (aka sustained high performance usage) preparation guide.

Just a note here from a guy with very limited mechanical skill. If you can *safely* get the car up and level (or just safely up at the back), and you get a pump that can mate with your oil bottle (the oil bottle amazon sells may be the wide-mouth not the one in the pic, and need the other cheap pump for larger bottle sizes), this job is much easier than changing the engine oil.

Attached is the Fill and Drain plug from my 500 mile diff-oil swap (the drain is the one with the shop towel behind it). That was metallic sludge on both (I smudged both moving around but most is still there). Probably can't hurt to get rid of it.

An added bonus of hard knowledge from another car I stupidly left go a bit long - if you take these plugs out now and then (start with the fill plug!) and torque them back down correctly, you know that they aren't seized. . . .

I’m doing mine tomorrow morning. Just turned over 500 miles this week and decided not to wait until 1000 miles. It really is easier than an oil change.

I do an oil change and diff fluid at 500 miles on my stuff.

I did it. Plan on keeping the car so why not. The plug was filthy, like above.

The plug will be filthy at any diff change because of clutch plate wear, mostly due to carbon fiber. But still, an initial flush and change will rid you of abrasive metal particles.

I did a very mild break in period and had the diff oil changed at about 1600 miles. The mechanic didn't just replace the oil, he did a flush first. "They want you to get the old oil out", he said.

I changed the rear diff fluid yesterday at 560 miles. The fill and drain plugs looked pretty close to the above pics and the fluid wasn't discolored. I changed the fluid around 1000 miles in my 2022 and it was a bit dirtier.

Based on the cleanliness of the fluid at 500 miles, I think this is a little early to change it. 1500 miles would be a better time do the first change.

I did mine at the first 500 miles, after the gears have broken in... going to do it again this week at 4k miles for good measure.

Can anyone tell me if a 2024 2SS has a breather on the diff ? Also it’s a 10 speed can anyone tell me if the transmission has a breather on it?

I was on a country road and had to drive through 12”+ water because there was no way to turn around. It may have been 16” - none got in the car and I went slow.
I am honestly sick about it and I have health issues and can’t get under it to check myself- any help would be appreciated thank you.

I did mine at 505 miles and again at 1,500 miles, the 505 had significant sludge on the magnetic drain plug, the 1,500 had a lot less but still a not "non-significant" amount, glad I did both, super cheap and easy to do yourself...

It's relatively cheap to have the dealership change out the diff fluid, relative as in the cost of a new differential and for piece of mind.
