Rear Glass Separation on the Convertible

I was about to bathe the Hulk and I noticed the rear window on the convertible top has started to separate from top. The separation is on the lower passenger side area. It looks like the adhesive gave out... bummer. I was wondering if anyone else has had this occur to their top and if anyone knows if Chevy has issued a recall or a bulletin on the apparently cheap adhesive. The Hulk was born in May of 2017 and it's a daily driver. Nevertheless, I expected to not have to repair the top in less than five years. Thanks in advance!

Had the same occur with mine, but it was replaced under warranty. No recall that I'm aware of. There's several threads on it in the Convertible sub-forum.

Was your repair within the 36 months & 36k miles bumper to bumper warranty? The Hulk is almost five years old & has 48k miles... I'm way past the initial bumper to bumper warranty. I'll try to find the other threads & see where it goes. Thanks for the information!

Yeah, mine was within the original bumper-to-bumper warranty. Some people have explored trying to reattach the glass with new adhesive, but I don't know how successful that was. The vast majority get the top replaced entirely. Good luck!

Replacing the entire top would be super disappointing... Thanks again!

The convertible glass separation from the top is a well known issue on this forum. There is a Chevy service bulletin listed in the threads on this forum that now lists 16 thru 21 verts concerning the glass separation issue. You can try to contact Chevy customer service concerning this issue, I doubt they will do anything for you since your Camaro is now out of warranty. I had a 17 vert that had the top replaced under warranty several years ago for this issue and traded it in 2021 for a new 21 Camaro RS vert. My 21 vert’s top does not appear to be stretched as tight around the rear glass as my 16 was. Maybe a slight change in the top that does not put as much pressure on the glass. My 21 vert is not a daily driver.

I had my convertible top replaced twice on my 2017, fortunately, under warranty.

Thank you all for the information, it's much appreciated. I will contact Chevy and see where it goes from there. I'll post the results of my inquiry.

Upset about rear window separation from convertible top

My 2024 2SS convertible is having same issue. Only 15k miles and a little over a year old. The rear window is separating from the seal on the top. It's a known issue and needs to be fixed by Chevy. This should be a safety recall. If it falls out while driving it could hit another car or worse.

Primer maybe?

Since this has been bumped to the top again (sorry it's of no real help):

I recently learned that the primer after being applied to the glass has a shelf life. This primer is the blackout, painted area of the glass that contacts the urethane for proper adhesion. If the primer/glass sits too long before the urethane is applied, then the bond will be weak. I think this time is measured in weeks.

I'm now guessing at this point, but I'd bet the tops were shipped to the assembly plant from a supplier with the glass already installed. That top supplier likely receives the glass from yet another 2nd tier company in anticipation of future orders from GM. It wouldn't surprise me if glass is either banked at the convertible top supplier or the glass manufacturer. Some of those parts may sit too long before being glued into the top. The result is a compromised bond and the separation that many are seeing.

I can't speculate on whether FIFO inventory management was used at either place or if the glass is date-coded for expiration as part of the quality assurance process.

Nor can I verify objectively that the primer degradation is a real occurrence, it's just what I've heard from an other, unleated conversation. I don't want to intentially spread mis-information, but this may be why some have problems and others don't. I'd be curious if there's a correlation between build date and separation problems that could corroborate this theory. Food for thought, anyway.

I have the same problem, my 2016 is out of warranty period. Chevrolet customer service in Detroit said only option was for me to pay to have the top replaced with NO participation from GM. The cost to replace the whole top is $3K from the dealer. Seems a lot to reseal a window. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you search in the convertible section, I recall someone who posted a thread about how he repaired his.

Convertible Window Seperation

Why wouldn't a 24 with this situation not be covered under warranty?
