Oil Testing

Since ZLEs have to switch back and forth due to track oil requirements this has lent itself to a bit of playing with different oils.

For a while I switched to 15W-50 and ran the car on that for about 500 Miles (track/road). I noticed that the pressures where high for the first 100 Miles and then dropped for the past 400 to the same levels I experience with 0W-40. I do get a little bit of extra vibration on idle -compared to 0W-40, but only when I am driving 'slow'. I have a sample that I am sending for lab analysis.

I also ran Castrol 0W-40 Dexos 2 that I got from Europe for about 500 miles and it ran very similar to Mobil 1, no perceived difference. Lab may tell a different story.

There is a ton of 5W-40 Dexos 2 oils in the market and since I am in the Heat 24x7x365, I am going to test a few, therefore, I am switching to Motul 5W-40 tomorrow for street use.

I recall hearing somewhere that the new Mobile 1 0-40 ESP Dexos 2 is rated for both street and track duty.

Anyone else hear this or was that my imagination?

Either way, I love to see good testing like this.

It is, but GM wants 15W-50 on the ZLE at the track. That is the reason for all the changes.

For a point of reference. I've been using Valvoline MST 5W-40 (DEXOS 2) in my ZL1 and oil sampling at every change. It has been basically flawless. The only flag I had was from some fuel dilution from taking a cold sample. The viscosity change for the 1LE is based on the potential for higher cornering forces. I've regularly hit 280 F oil temps during long track sessions.

Blackstone labs saves $$ for more oil changes.

I skipped Valvoline because I suspected you guys were already running it.

Motul 6100 5w40 Dexos 2 is only $31 for 5 qt jug.

I'm confident this Motul is better oil than M1 0w40 ESP, many skilled mechanics and track rats I know love it.

I just ordered 10L Motul 6100 for $71 shipped by Amazon Prime. 10Q of Valvoline MST is $70 shipped from Walmart.

I also bought from Amazon, their prices fluctuate between $31 and $36 USD per 5 Liters.

Also, keep in mind that 10 Liters = 10.6 Quarts.

Yes, can't just dump in the 2 full containers like I do with M1 15w50. It's a good deal for Motul.

Cool thread. Can someone that is trying the Motul do 3-4 track days and take an oil sample?
