DIY'd CF Steering Wheel

WarHammer CF Steering Wheel.
I got the "Leather" one, non-perforated, not alcantara.

Thanks to videos online from others such as Lethal Camaro, etc -- this was actually pretty straight forward. Believe it or not, it took me about 1 hour.

Some commentary / steps that helped me:

- You will need an impact wrench I had mine set to about 250ft/lbs. A breaker-bar just won't work, I tried.

- allen wrench / hex key -- I found works great for releasing the airbag locks on the sides of the steering column.

- small flat head screwdriver try release wiring harness locks.

Most of the wiring plugs behind the airbag come off pretty easily if you've got a small flat-head screwdriver to lift the release. They're all pretty easy to get to as long as you undo them in the right order (you'll know).

The only tricky wiring plugs were the two that plug into the center of the airbag (see photo below). Both plugs had two orange locks, one on each side. Be sure to lift both sides before pulling up on the plug.

Thoughts:
You may have seen from another thread that I had some minor issues with my first steering wheel from WildHammer but their customer service is excellent and I got a new one right away. I have great respect for WildHammer as a business.

As for the steering wheel itself... Is it worth $1000 ?
+ The CF quality is excellent.
+ The appearance is #RACECAR (racecar backwards spells racecar).
+ The wheel is thicker which feels much better than OEM IMO, though I'm 6'4 and have very large hands.
+ Opt for the red paddles, totally worth it.
- Made in China shines through on the assembly
- Things are glued poorly in my opinion.
- You may get someone else's cruddy old steering wheel and abused switches.
- Where the leather meets the CF, feels like it may begin to lift up eventually.
- No idea about the quality of the leather. Is it OEM leather restitched? I doubt it but I don't know.

I'd feel like the steering wheel is a fair deal if I paid $500.
Having said that, even though I paid $1000 I do still like it very much over OEM.
So the steering wheel is an upgrade but know what you're getting into before you buy.

Thanks for the write up.
Did you find a torque spec on the nut the impact was used on?

No, I followed Lethal Camaro's advice and marked the bolt and tightened it back to the original rotation. I was a bit worried about this but turns out it feels naturally tight at that very spot.

I have the same wheel minus the center stripe. I could not get the nut off with my impact wrench, and had to take the car to the dealer for removal and installation. Apparently the nut was on so tight, they somehow destroyed the stock wheel getting it off.

Regardless, I love the wheel.

OP, after your previous post, I reached out to the person in China directly. Indeed they can make these for much cheaper as EDPHobboes stated. I got one made for my CTS-V from them. Some sites are selling the same wheel for $1,300. I got it for $440 shipped

If someone likes these steering wheels but want them for much cheaper than $1000, shoot me a DM
