Anybody dye any of the stitching with any luck?
I plan of swapping out to suede knee pads and suede dash pad soon, so I want black stitching on all the suede parts (I have an early car, so my suede shift boot has black stitching). I am going to leave the stitching light gray on the leather parts.
So, my plan would be to dye the light gray stitches on the suede steering wheel black to match with this theme. I see these fabric dye pens, anybody ever try them? I want something that will last, as I want to do it once and be done. If need be I will have an upholstery shop do it. |

Do a search, the dye pens work well, for years...don't fade, and is easy to do. You must go from white to dark, naturally you can't go the other way. The pen to use is an uchida FINE POINT dye pen, get about 3-4 to do the car.

Cool, thanks Glen...I just need to do the steering wheel as I mentioned, so I will just order one pen.

Easy going to black....go over it twice. The fine points go blunt fast, get two.

Its going to be very hard to dye stitching on suede parts. The reason is that the tip is large and you will inevitably get some around the stitch - even if you find a fine tip pen. On leather it doesnt absorb in right away, so you just wipe it off, but on micro suede, its going to soak right in I'd think.

Man you are talking about a super tedious and slow job on a TON of stitching lol. I personally dont have the patience for that kind of work but if you do sir than more power to you!

I've found a lot of positive reviews for this. Only downside they say is for some reason people can have issues if it was applied when it was too cold.

Haven't tried it on suede, but my Uchida red dye used on the very light grey stitches on my 2SS steering wheel, seats, and all other stitches looks fine one year later.
Glen was right, have to go slow and go over at least twice. The fine tip does blunt fairly quickly, however I was able to use just one pen for the steering wheel and got good results. I used a total of 3 for the entire interior. He's he guru on such things and they are cheap so better to not run out of ink or have a too worn tip. Amazon has them as do Michaels and fabric stores. And it does take a lot of time as there is a ton of hard to access stitching. I don't have a handy photo of the steering wheel, but all the stitches in the car look like this. The rear seat area was the hardest for me as the access was so limited. |
