Hello everyone,
Well, it's my 2nd post but I've been lurking around here for some time. I'm interested in a Camaro and was wondering if the 4cylinder turbo with a manual transmission will be reliable. How do people with this set up like it? I'm a retired guy that loves cars. This car would be a 2nd fun car for my wife and I. We don't live in a big city so driving a stick shift in congested traffic usually isn't a problem though, winter season traffic does increase but it isn't too bad. I'll probably drive it fewer than 6,000 miles per year. I'm open to any and all advice and suggestions. Thanks for all of your help! |

If you don't plan any big modification to the car, i would recommend the V6. It's just 1.5k usd more for 60 HP and runs non premium fuel. My Camaro is a 2.0 M6. I drove it for 10k miles over the last 6 month in town and on the highway. As always, manual is a bit more active driving. On highly congested traffic the manual is a bit annoying otherwise it's fine.
Concerning the reliability of the Turbo M6. I have no idea, the car is too new. The only thing we can do is compare with the Cadillac ATS that runs the same engine. |

the current turbo 2.0 litter motor is the the current version of the 2.0 litter that goes back to the lnf used in the sky/solstice rwd and the cobalt /hhr ss,tc cars . it used in several other gm cars but to the best of my knowledge this is the only current RWD of it . the turbo motor makes more torque then the v6 and has less weight then the v6 or the v8 and a nearly 50/50% weight split front to rear . GM has many more years of reliability out this series of motor then ford does out of its eco bost .With the stick shift is the only way I would want this set up .

If you're going the 4cyl route, you will find its easier keeping it in the powerband with an auto vs manual. If you really don't care, the manual while clunky in these cars will do.

I'd just buy a used C6 vette instead. It's a much better car.

I doubt it is a much better car the interior is cheap rides like a wheel barrel not comfortable for a older gentlemen! I would it ignore that car unless you can swing a 2014 up! Now to answer your question from a more reliable source!
I owned the older version 2.0 LNF manual for 5 years these motors are great i still 3 years later love that motor even though i have the SS i remember everything from the cold starts to the sound. I bolted and tuned mine at 12000 k'ms it made 300hp and 370tq i then drove 50000 and 3 summers embarrassing cars worth twice as much it was a rocket! I sea foamed and popped in new injectors just before i sold it at 60k if i would of left it stock i'm sure this would not have been a issue! Camaro 4 will be a reliable light nimble car and a comfortable car at that the v6 is also great in the new camaro great reviews and engine note. If you are only doing 6k a year driving then either option would last a long time!

I have a 2.0 manual and would have to agree that having those 2 extra gears in the auto make a difference. Seems like I'm always just outside the power band when cruising around town. I'd grab the auto if I could do it again. Remote start also helps in the winter.

- The 4 cyl Maro is going to take a beating in depreciation. The Vette is already depreciated. - The base Vette rides quite well. Like a wheel barrel? Is that supposed to be a joke. - This is a second car that's supposed to be the toy. Let the main car have the nice interior. - 430 HP/~3200 lbs vs. 275 HP/~330 lbs. Come on. - The Vette sounds dramatically better. - The Vette is smaller, making it easier to maneuver and park. - It's a Vette. |

I'll chime in here for fun. I do not own a 6th Gen V6 I did however come from a 5th Gen V6 and ended up in the I4 or Turbo 4 for those who don't know what I4 means... As for the vette it's a vette but the cost of ownership will be higher in any and all repairs.
If your going to just keep it stock get the V6 manual or Automatic it has plenty of power stock moreso then the I4 if you intend to add power to it somewhere get the I4 the V6 across generations has a lackluster aftermarket to make serious power unless your putting insanely high amounts of money into it. The I4 can surpass the V6 with the same amount extra you spent on the engine option and that's pre-tune. Either way it's your decision OP and my advice is if your going manual get the V6 unless you intend to add more power later on and tune it.

He said nothing about even a SS so I wouldn't think he would be interested so no comparing to be done that's all! I figured you were joking there not in the same price range!
But I'm not going to argue I was giving him useful info on the 2.0 that he'd asked about why not a mustang? Why not a BMW why? Cause he didn't ask about it...

I wanted to thank everyone for their input. You have given me some real good information that is going to help us make the correct decision. My wife and I are going to test drive both the 4cyl and 6cyl tomorrow and we'll keep you all updated. Thanks!

I LOVE this setup. Basically the 6M is bipolar, in a good way. Keep your shifts at 3,500 and below and it drives like the Cadilac ATS it's based on. Oh, and I get 34.4 mpg highway when I drive like that. Keep your shifts above 3,500 and that 295 foot-pounds of torque runs wild. (That's more than the V6, in a lighter car.) Frankly I'm not surprised this car confuses so many people. It's a lot less muscle car, and a lot more BMW/EVO/hot hatch. Wind it up to 7,000, keep it above 4,000 when you shift, and you won't be able to stop giggling. And I still get 26.6 mpg around town driving like that. Finally, I did drive the C7 vette before buying the Camaro. Which is better will be determined by your definition of fun. If you mean a Miata - transport for you, and maybe one other, and nothing else - then you'll like the Vette. But if you're like me, and fun includes driving to the beach with your lady and luggage for the weekend...The Camaro is the only way to go. With the roof down I can still fill my backseat with a good deal of luggage. If you put the Vette's glass top in the back...you'd be lucky to get her pocketbook back there. |
