Yet there were V8s during that entire time (as poor as some of us think they were). The pressures on the car industry today are not nearly what they were during the oil embargo. That was not foreseen and it was at the same time new emission standards hit. That was a double whammy with little time for the industry to respond. Then new standards have a long time horizon and way more flexibility.

And we still have V8s.

If you want to worry about losing V8s, you should worry about losing them in Pickups. That is where the real FE pressure is now, not in the very limited number of cars that have them today. If we lose them in trucks because they can't get the FE numbers where they need to be for that footprint, then that will either drive up the cost of V8s for cars, stifle development of better versions or both.
and Ford's new contract with the UAW outlines improvements to both the 5.0, 5.2 and 6.2 continuing on. As well as a new displacement V-8 for super duty trucks

I hope you're right, GretchenGotGrowl. Choice is the basis of a democracy. And I see that slipping away too. But that's a WHOLE other forum!

My guess, is yes even if there wasn't a V8 there would still be a big following on Camaro forums. That being said, there should be no worries about losing the V8 as an option anytime soon.
While this is true, more V8s were sold in the first year than V6s despite them being quite hard to find. Further, the GenV came from an auto show concept car with a V8 that sparked a groundswell of demand. I submit that without the V8, the GenV would not even exist.

People talk about boost being the substitute for cubes, but the way I see it, if you can get 500hp from 3L you can get 1000 out of 6L.

There are crappy 4 and 6 cyl designs that nobody races just like there are crappy V8 designs that nobody races. Lets hope the lot of new turbo engines have something left on the table so even more boost can be applied without them coming apart or being prohibitively expensive to get them there.

Absolutely agree. Add that in the 70's the American car companies had to switch gears, as in entire design and engineering philosphies relatively overnight. The oil embargo created a fear based market that changed the way people felt about cars. I don't think it was really all that much about government that drove it, as it was market demand. Understand that we went from loving our big, heavy, flashy and powerful "American Steel" without a thought about gasoline availability, much less price, to what happens when I can't find gas, and when I do, will I still be able to feed my children. This happened in a very short time. The foreign manufacturer's were ready to pounce on that opportunity, because they had been building small cars for decades already. We didn't see many of them over here because we didn't want them. All of a sudden, we felt like we needed them. Thus, we had a lot of catching up to do. Add EPA into the mix, and it was even more. Though i wonder if EPA regs didn't buy the Americans some time, as the foreign cars had a new engineering hurdle to clear if they wanted to sell in America.

I just hate the feel of 4cyl (turbo or not). I don't mean tracking it, but rather just daily driving. The power of the V8 I find is just a more pleasurable experience all around. Never struggles, and sounds great without revving the shit out of it. 90% of the 4bangers out there sound like ass to me. Please point me in the direction of a 4cyl that sounds good and isn't creating fake sounds through the speakers. I'm truly interested. But I guess it's personal preference. I barely like my neighbors G37 which is a 6cyl but he loves the sound of the thing. NOT FOR ME.

I also have an issue with a brawny looking car with only 2liters under the hood and sounding like a civic. Just can't get over it no matter how fast that car is. I would be embarrassed to take off from a light and see peoples disappointment in not hearing the V8 from such an iconic pony car.

Personally I never thought I'd enjoy a v6 but then I test drove the 2ls and had to have it. I'm more of a fan of this car than the 2lts I looked at and it works great for me as a dd. I still have a 91 v8 that is a very fun ride but the v6 in the 2015 sounds good and is a blast to drive. Will I say that the v6 has it's place in the muscle/ pony cars, yes due to current specs and technology. However these cars have always had a v6 option and I feel that if they introduced a new 4 cylinder option it will quite possibly follow the path of the previous camaro 4 cylinder and flop, turbo or not.

I've never come across a true car enthusiast that doesn't thoroughly enjoy the sound of the Subaru boxer motor in the WRX/STi - so long as they don't have equal length headers or an external waste gate. Then they sound like ass.
