Probably want the version, where I can change back to stock, in case of a service visit...

I'm sorry to say, once you get tuned you cannot hide it. If for some reasom GM looks for this they can tell. Just want you to be aware.

You could swap in a stock computer... But, not sure if they could also tell this (encoded to the car maybe?)

Yes, from my reading, they can tell its a different pcm. My opinion though is if I have stock calibrations altered and something goes wrong, its on me.

Rob and others with a 2017 A8 you will be limited in your tuning ability you could easily do over what i am if you get your TCM done but on 2017s you need to physically send your TCM to HPtuners to unlock it's not remote unlockable at this time.

If you brought the car in with a 'back up' computer, they can tell. The part number used for the initial calibration won't match the calibration your car shipped with. You'd have to keep your 'stock' ECU clean. Even that won't save you. If you bring you car in with the rods hanging out of the block, and a clean ECU with no freeze frame data, or emissions readiness monitors set, or diagnostic codes set, they will laugh you out of the dealership along with denying your warranty.

Exactly. Gotta pay to play. They can tell if the ECU wasn't in the car when the problem happened. I gave an extreme example above, but people don't realize that there are other simpler ways of being caught.

RPM Motorsports sells a tuner pkg for the 2017. 'Seems' they can unlock and alter the tune...

I was planning on swapping the tune from theirs, back to stock, IF it required service - would they know ?

Yes, GM can see it if they are looking.

RPM and anyone with HPTuners or EFILive can unlock and alter the tune on a 2017. They cannot however just unlock and remote program a TCM on a 2017 so your numbers running an A8 will be limited to about what mine is making. To release that extra power safely you need to tune the TCM which at this point is ridiculously expensive.

With the A8 TCM, Is it just a matter of shifting early?

GM has put so much torque management in these cars it's insane i thought I'd be good with the ecm tune for my target goal of 5th gen V8 power and i was wrong it's totally doable with bolt-ons but the TCM has an additional layer of torque management opposite the ECM.

Yeah, you really need to get yours out on a track to see what it runs without the TCM being tuned. Have you looked into the possibility of buying a spare TCM?

Yes. Tuning back to stock still changes the flash counter/checksum they are using. If you tune your ECU at all, you are effectively voiding your warranty. That said, if no one ever goes looking into your ECU, you'll be fine. They aren't going to pull an ECU image when repairing a defective power window motor. But the second you have a drivetrain problem, that is going to be on your dime.

Secondly, no tuner is immune presently. They all alter the flash counter/checksum. Even the canned tunes like Diablo/IPF/etc.
