just a thought here,people assume that a 4 cylinder is more economical than a v-8.im pretty sure economy is more affected by displacement than the number of pistons,i.e. a 500 cubic inch four cylinder would burn more fuel than a 330 cubic inch v-8.while it might be more efficient for the car manufacturers to go to 4s or 6s,300 cubic inches is 300 cubic inches no matter how many cylinders it is poured into.back in the 60s people would think you were crazy if you told them a 217 cubic inch 6 cylinder could make 330 horsepower,idle smoothly and quietly,and be fuel efficient.in 50 years or less,our high tech engines of today will probably be looked upon as outmoded and inefficient.

With the SS at 455 HP, ZL1 at 650 HP, not a lot of places to go with the V8. When GM announced they were going to have a 4 cylinder in the Camaro, they compared it against a 1990 (or so) Z28, same specs!!!

With the V6 over 300 HP and the 4 Cylinder close behind, how ,much horsepower is reasonable in an internal combustion engine. I know you can modify the V8 to get 1000 HP or more. Most people won't do this. Few will modify the engine period.

If they made an all electric Camaro I would be first in line. Electric cars have come a long way. Look on youtube for the Tesla against the Challenger, wow.

Porsche is coming out with a 600 HP electric, would kick any V8's butt.

Electric cars have maximum horsepower at 0 rpm's, not like an internal combustion engine. The performance of an electric is now at or better than internal combustion. The storage needs to increase, it is in the 300 km range now, sure it will be in excess of 400 km in a year.

If I could get the performance of the V8 (450 HP) and get 500 km to a charge, I am in. Charge would cost a fraction of the premium gas, especially at night. Even less if you put some solar panels on the roof!!!!

But there will be a new V8 that will walk all over the old V8 also.
The technology that makes the I4 better will make the V8 better also.

My automatic is fine, M6 would be more fun to drive.
Was planning on a 2017 ZL1 m6, but having shoulder issues and looking at complete shoulder replacement in the next 60 days if I can get the courage up to let them cut my arm off and put new technology parts in it.

If it comes down to no more V8s (which it most likely will in the distant/not so distant future) I'll get over it. As long as it performs just as good as, if not better than current V8s.

I love the sound they make, but it's not a deal breaker by any means. The current V6 Camaro sounds awesome as well.

I can understand the guys that want a V8 however.

There are other problems besides range.
Time to full charge .
When all electric is the norm the cost of electricity will sky rocket.

It is very possible that we may getting very close to the end of the v-8 in cars designed for personal use, trucks and other commercial vehicles/equipment will probably need them for a little longer.

It seems that the technology in alternative powertrain vehicles is coming along, but it still has a long way to go before they can replace the internal combustion engine. Regardless of emotion, while on the surface the electric engines make sense an are very efficient at delivering power, the overall efficiency in practical application is still not even close to what pistons and a crankshaft can supply. Range and power storage are obstacles that are still too large for these to become mainstream, and will be for quite awhile. However, there are many applications where electric powered vehicles would be perfect. So, in this respect, they assist in the overall energy picture.

The real winner in the energy game is going to be that one that invents a full synthetic fuel that can fully replace traditional gasoline with no to minimal change required to current engines. I'm not talking about substitutes like ethanol, but an actual synthetic gasoline. It may even have the side effect of burning cleaner, who knows. Of course, this may be impossible, but then there was a time when the internal combustion engine was considered 'impossible'. Point is that I think it would be more beneficial to look for alternatives to petroleum based fuels for the engines we have than to replace the engines altogether.

8...arranged in a v pattern so traditionalists can still say they have a v-8.and if it doesnt have solar panels it is correct that we will just be transferring our pollution source from many mobile to a few huge stationary sources.plus the power loss inherent in getting the electrons to your battery.until we can develop solar panels that can power a car/recharge batteries directly its probably just a pipe dream.
