Considering zl1 (trade in ss and vette)
Has anyone owned a 2ss gen6 ss and a stingray (2lt z51) and traded them in on a zl1? Im considering doing this for a vert zl1 and wanted to hear some real life comparisons and contrasts between the cars. I tried a search here but it doesnt seem to be working.
Most interested in hearing about these comparisons: -power delivery and feel -daily comfort vs the ss -is the zl1 actually more fun? Sure its better/faster, but on the streets, is it too good? -how much better is turn in feel.. and is rear end more lively? -can the seat adjust as much as the ss? No bolster adjustment, right? -does the vert lose any rear headroom from the ss coupe? -does the vert rattle more? Wind Noisier? -is the ss and zl1 exhaust rear section the same? (Npp) -will my 2ss rims fit on the zl1?

It's a great DD otherwise. The mag ride is comfortable in 'tour' and even 'sport' mode, while still cornering as well as the 'vette. |

Hello friend! Traded in 2017 2ss all options mrc / adaptive exhaust and I can tell you it's a very sweet and capable machine!! Did a 0-60 in 4.0 and on zl1 best is 3.7. Although that doesn't begin to describe how amazing zl1 is it tells you that on the street the SS is way way more than enough. The LT1 is sweet and sounds great BUT the LT4 is a monster even though it taller geared, the thing sounds sicker and more menacing, the supercharger whine and massive torque are something to behold... however it is a stiffer ride and less comfy. Is it worth the extra $16k?depends if you already have a z51 then you have all you need a nice comfy fast Amazing camaro (90% on way to zl1) and a harder edged z51. Unless you want to simplify your life and have one less car then would stay with what you have it's not worth it. Also the convertible zl1 will have the same diff yoyr ss has not the e-diff and will be lesshard edged. Looking back, not sure I would have traded the ss for the zl1 It certainly is a beast but really can't use it on street. Neither could one with the SS |

I traded in a 2014 Stingray in for my 2017 ZL1 no regrets. The ZL1 is faster, more comfortable, and fun as hell. Only thing I miss is the fuel mileage.

Selecting the topless ZL1 tames the track-day specialist coupe by stripping away some of the high-tech hardware, creating more of a formidable Sunday cruiser. The convertible lives without the coupe’s trick eLSD, or electronically controlled limited-slip differential. The folding roof hardware gobbles up the available space, so a conventional limited-slip diff is installed instead. More important, this in turn takes away Chevrolet’s stellar Performance Traction Management (PTM) feature, a multilevel stability- and traction-control system capable of turning any driving zero into a road-course hero. While launch control is still selectable, the loss of PTM means there’s no longer the ability to customize launches by dialing in wheelspin off the line

Wow, these are great replies.. more cerebral and on true point than I expected, hah!
Im pretty good at buying cars cheap (meaning, I shouldnt lose too much and we all know modern cars are not investments anyway), so I assuming the dealer doesnt rape me on trade in, Im guesstimating about a $330/month savings to do the swap (figuring in one less payment a month, insurance and winter storage costs). Its definitely tempting... So Catdog, the vert only doesnt get the ediff.. Yah honestly, I couldnt tell you what it does, I wont miss it. One of the reasons I prefer the ss is that it still needs me. The vette is almost too good on the street, which makes it boring actually. And if you take the nannies off, it wants to kill you - that car rotates so fast, not progressive. I used to slide my c5z06 all over the place, I literally never do it in the c7.. This is actually my main concern, that the zl1 will lose some of that sloppy raucous american brute charm of the ss that I like so much. Im not really looking for better point and shoot vette-type handling per se, just more... character.

I would say you would be very happy with the trade and would have one less car to worry about. Re. the e-diff, i thought it was super critical but honestly, i have only used the fancy TPM software a couple of times (i don't race) and it's not a make it/break it proposition. You still have the 'competitive mode' available. One thing i can't comment on is body rigidity and flex over bumps; that used to annoy me in my 997 cabriolet, so would check on that and then of course the weather where you live and road conditions. Sounds like i would do the trade in... |

Yes I'm a little concerned with going with a vert here. I am in upstate NY, and I'm sure that roof will take a beating. Our last two winters were pretty mild, and it would be garaged, but its going to get salty and yucky for sure.
But one of the things I love about the vette is the open roof so I figured that if it truly will be a no sacrifice trade, then the zl1 should have no roof. It would be SUPER nice to hit a button to put the top down at 30mph instead of pulling over and lifting off a clunky roof panel and shoving it in the trunk, like I do now.I could deal with a slightly firmer ride.. something between the SS's touring and sport is what I should expect? Now to find a gray zl1 vert! I dont see any locally.. I normally buy sports cars in the winter, but considering I'll be trading in two of them, I suppose timing might make more sense from a trade in value to do it around now.. We'll have to see how this plays out. Can anyone comment on the body rigidity coupe vs vert? I recall the scuttle shake of the c5 platform a while back and I know what you mean. I assume its loads better now, but is it perceivable?!

Thanks for the info! I actually was wondering if rear visibility and head height would also be affected by the convertible..

I can't comment personally, but subaruwrxfan on youtube (he now goes by Matt Maran Motoring) test drove both the ZL1 coupe and convertible and he thought the vert felt similarly ridgid. Of course, it's almost certainly not as ridgid as the coupe in actual measured terms, but if it feels solid under most driving conditions, it probably won't disappoint.
