Launching on stock run flats with a modified SS A8

For those of us that are not running race ready tires (DR's or slicks), once you start tuning these cars, the stock run flats are all but useless at the track especially with torque management turned off.

Launch control (LC) can be very good at getting the car to leave the start as hard as the car can given the track and weather conditions. I have tried launching my car over and over again without launch control and have never been able to better it.

Of course, if you are using a drag pack or similar tire setup, launch control will not get your best times.

My best 60' time without LC is in my signature. Over the last couple days at the track in terrible heat and lousy track conditions, LC kept me at 1.99 60' times over and over again. We ran consistent 12.2 at 114 times in 3000'+ DA's, which would match my fastest times shown in the signature in better weather. I have confidence in this excellent feature from GM.

Please realize that my car is not running on the stock tune, so those of you that are not tuned, you should be able to get your best times without LC. I'll always use LC now that I have had dozens of runs and tested different combos with my particular set of mods.

My steps for drag racing:

1. Cool off car after getting to the track and set rear tires at 20-22PSI.
2. Start car when ready, turn on competition mode and keep it in Sport.
3. Manually shift to 1st and drive around the water box if allowed.
4. Set up in the grooves in front of the water box.
5. Do a slow 3-4K RPM burnout while lightly applying the brakes for about 5 seconds.
6. Put the car in "D" and slowly approach the tree.
7. Gently move forward until the first set of staging lights are lit, and then let the car drift itself forward until the second staging lights light.
8. Crush the brake to the floor to prepare LC.
9. Stab the throttle to the floor and wait for the amber lights to fall.
10. On the third amber (if non-pro tree), let go of the brake and keep the car straight.
11. Try to keep the car centered in your lane and have fun!

I went 11.70's@118 with no E85 and same mods as you with 1.77 60fts with a totally different technique on the stock tires. It is all discussed below. Hopefully it helps you get to your goals.

Thank you, I read all of that and tried your advice before.

Problem is I'm at a different track and environment. I have hit 1.7 60' times with my tires and a tune (92 octane) and PTB. I have hit 11.80 and close to a 1.9 with a 1.92 60' with my current bolt ons. Maybe my track just isn't prepped well enough on street nights, or the salt air and lingering moisture in FL just sucks. The track is like a sheet of ice in my opinion, and I have been drag racing since 1998 fairly regularly. Of course, you could make a fool out of me by driving my car for me and hitting a better time... LOL.

Yessir, a custom tune like one that EFITuning, Pray, or Fasterproms offer for example. There are other people that can help you as well, but those are the ones that I am familiar with.

I am sure you know what you are doing. I doubt I could improve on your times. My track prep is usually pretty good I will admit. But I did notice that my best pass came with a terrible track. I was slipping and sliding all day till the end. I started doing longer burn outs and it helped.

I will say that on the street before the converter I would use launch control on the stock tires. That gave me my best results.

I am not sure which technique Tim used but he took my record and ran 11.68. Not sure what his 60ft was but his passes were not on the stock run flats even though they were a "stock" radial tire. Nothing special for sure. He is down in Florida as well. I think he trapped in the low 120's as well. Not sure what my car would do on the stock tires in its current configuration.

I know this is old - but its what got me my best run on all stock ss of 12.523

Similar in cool down, and using LC. I have a similar tree 3rd light and hit it, I go to PBIR in jupiter (palm beach) FL.

Track seems atrociously prepped, but at 930 they shut it down for street cars and re prep for the drag slicks and drag radials. Open up after 10 again.

Does anyone know what module controls the launch control and traction control? Chassis control module?

If you mess with the torque coeffient tables I'm sure you would throw off the traction control
