If you are impatient like me you can grab the APK and install it if you have the technical knowledge to install an unsigned app.

I know what you mean. I open Waze first, then plug in. Android Auto will start, then I can use my "recents" button to pull up apps that have run/are running and select the Waze app.

This way, Android Auto is still up on my dash and Waze is up on my phone. YMMV, depending on what phone you have, but it should be similar for every phone.

Guess I need to find the recents button. I cannot get apps to pull up, period and normally just un-plug. I have S8

Your recent button is the left one if you haven't changed it. Looks like to L's on top of each other.

The S8 wont let you use the recents button with Android Auto.

Older than Nougat OS's do. Consider it a bug that you used to be able to do it as you're not supposed to be able to do anything on the phone directly when using AA.

I use a custom launcher on N (Nova Launcher), which seems to allow this.
