You can always use one of those OBD tools and manually check the reading on the trans temp. But as said above, even autos have trouble moving the temp in anything but hard performance driving.

Don't assume its not working. My 2015 duramax trans temp runs about 106 in this cold weather.

When I had my '16 SS A8, the outside temps would have to be mid to upper 70's for the trans tem to come off the minimum readout. My daily commute is 27 miles one way. I also worried but noticed on the 1st really warm day last year it finally moved. I know you've got a M6 but from what I've read, the trans coolers for both M6 and A8's are really good at keeping the temp down. Last May I drove from NC to south Florida and it never made it above 130. And that wasn't until I made it half way thru Florida when it really started to get hot outside.

Yeah I have one and will hook it up just to see. Was a casual question originally, and now I'm more impressed with this car lol.

THANKS

On the SS 1LE I read 4 qts, I bought 5 qts and only used 4 qts. I only got 3.5 qts out of the transmission from the OEM fluid.

First off this will be an absolute pain in the ass on the floor with jackstands. If you have access to a oil change pit, a 4 post lift it will a lot easier. Either way, get the car up in the air and level. The fill port is on the drivers side of the transmission. Use a 3/8 ratchet and remove the fill port plug. If transmission fluid weeps out then it is filled to capacity.

I had the same question...

http://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?p=9617026

It seems like GM should make the gauge extents cover the normal range of operating temperatures. A friend of mine has a '17 CTS-V (basically the same as a ZL1) with a digital/numeric transmission temperature gauge. He drove his today for hours on the interstate and he said it didn't go above 95 degrees.

The reason they don't is GM is not worried about sub 100° transmission fluid temps. The transmission would live forever at those temps.

What would it hurt?. Under that argument why not start the engine temp gauge at 200+.

It's confusing because you can't distinguish between a normal temperature and a gauge that isn't working.

I drove my car home from the dealer yesterday wondering if they forgot to put the transmission fluid in from the factory (the temp sensor needs the fluid to be present in order to work correctly).

Here is a pic I took for the OP after a very spirited drive home thru the mountains this evening. I spent 15-20 minutes at higher RPM (3500-5500) in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears and this is as hot as the transmission got. The cooler definitely stops cooling as soon as you turn off the engine. I turned the car back on 2 hours later to go to the store and the temp had only fallen by 25 degrees. It is particularly warm here (70F) so I am sure the ambient temperature of the air kept it from cooling off as quickly as it would if it was moving but not being thrashed.
