Haha, I do the same thing... But only if it catches my attention in my peripheral vision, It's a quick jolt of "oh crap!".

I'm surprised GM was so bold to use pretty bright red and blue lights on the rear view mirror.

So, what is the final verdict.......are the Homelink buttons on the 2016 2SS cars supposed to be illuminated or not? Mine do not light up and there is nothing in the owners manual that I can find.

They are supposed to light up. MANNAXMAN confirmed this in his post regarding his '16 2SS.

SamMoranPranks posted in this thread a video showing that his HomeLink was never connected, and how to pop out the console and connect it. Not sure why this is such an issue from the factory... but there definitely seems to be an issue with the HomeLink connections as stated by just the few in this thread!

Just for the sake of it, as the homelink lights are not very bright to begin with, check you interior lights are turned up. If adjusted downward, that could be the issue?? The interior light control will darken not only your instrument display, but also make it look like your nav is blank(black screen)too. Just a thought before taking it to a dealer. And we all know we hate to do that.

One of the complaints I had with the 5th Gen were those Home Link buttons impossible to see in the dark.

I was pleasantly surprised to find the Home Link buttons on the 2017 had little lights on each button.
I was so used to the feel I never even looked.

Mine work, but don't light up.

I got an update from the dealer service department. Funny how they are always just about to call you when you call them. I digress. They replaced the console module but no joy. Their next step is to trace the power wiring to see where the breakdown in electrical current is.

Are we all talking about the same thing on this Homelink?

The red light should show when any of the buttons are pushed.

If it doesn't, then the unit is not getting power.

The real question is whether the DOTS on each button should be lighting up.

So far, all I see is that some of the 2SS light up and some do not.

I have a 1SS but added the 2SS console, ran power to the Homelink and it works fine but the buttons do not light up.

I looked inside - I did not see any LEDs to light it up [so I added mine[....

My 17 2SS buttons do light up. Not very bright though.
