Talking Had a dream

I had a dream the other night that all we had were electric 2 seat cars with no v8 gasoline engines allowed on the freeways. The future looked bleak for the v8 gasoline engine, so buy now, or we may some day in the near future be stuck with the economy electric car. The only purpose is to go form point A to point B. This is why I bought my 2SS and why you should too. This is for all those like me that live at the edge of life.

Not sure how a 401k is going to help you when one of the following is certain to occur before you can use it:

1. Zombie apocalypse. The government has plans for it....
2. Day After Tomorrow. Storms getting more frequent, ice is melting....
3. Mad Max. Stock market crash/correction is way more devastating when your economy doesn't produce anything and all your money is in it. Once #1 or #2 are dealt with, #3 becomes the new world order.
4. Aliens.
5. Revolution occurs where the 99% take back the disproportionate wealth hoarded by the 1% in a bloody multi-decade war that causes either a V for Vendetta future for the US or a Hunger Games future.

That's my retirement plan.

Bought a brand new 05 Honda Accord V6 within a week (always had very good credit) and got a job 2 weeks later for 10.00 an hour. found a room for rent in a very good area in a nice house with a single mother (who's son was in prison) and acquired another 550.00 monthly debt. I just requested as much ot as possible and averaged 60 hours a week. Did this for almost 2 years and then got a slightly better job. Went form 31k a year to 55K driving trucks hazmat for another 3 years then jumped into the oilfield and more than doubled my pay. For 31 I'm damn proud but also paid my dues and busted my #ss to get where I am now. Yes it feels amazing to be able to buy a badass car and pay in full without worrying about payments etc. Do I have tons of $ in my account? Hell no, need more but I am comfy at least
Good job. Haha you're young. I didn't enter the workforce really until age 28. I was a starving actor living off the McDonalds value menu for 8 years or so.

47 now and if I didn't need $ to buy another house, I'd be in an SS. I may not buy for another 4-5 years so in theory I could get the SS now and have time to save up the $ I'd spend on the SS. But these days I like having at least $200K in savings. Or at least $100K after a house down payment. I just like having $ and not worrying about sh!t.

Yeah $550/mo car payment on $10/hr. That's gotta be a world record LOL.

I've never owned a car more than $30K. But everyone has been paid for in cash or a lot put down with payments always under $200/mo.

The new car thrill wears off substantially. I couldn't fathom having a 5yr old car with a $600/mo payment that I'm almost surely upside down on.

Having lots of cash in the bank and not worrying about debt is 10x better in the long run.
I actually do not live with my parents, I share an apartment with a roommate. I totally understand what I got myself into, and I have had a couple fleeting regretful thoughts, but overall I'm still happy with my decision. My previous car was turning into a money pit despite the fact I didn't have a payment on it, and with another big looming repair, I quickly got into something new (yes I could have gotten something cheaper but that's a different story).

I'm definitely not arguing with you, but would like to provide some evidence to the contrary: I have that $630/mo payment, 23 y/o, 66k salary. I contribute 10% to my 401k plus a 5% match from my company, which is above average for all ages, forget about other people my age. I also pay rent, and still manage to save close to $1k/mo. Obviously I could be saving a lot more than that, but I'm alright with the tradeoff for now.

If you're able to save that much and contribute that much, good on you for that. Living with a roommate obviously helps. Just don't spend $ on h00kers and you should be alright.

Good ol' Silver Spring, MD. I grew up in Rockville, MD. Lived in MD/VA area until 2005. Still go back every year to visit.

oddjack, owning something subject to a lien doesn't make you a non-owner. silly. if you're trying to make some sort of legal point regarding ownership of or title to personal property ... please stop. if it's your philosophy -- an opinion -- well, you know what they say about those.
