Entertaining thread to read stories of different folks...everyone's financial situation is different, different stages of life, different priorities
![]() My 2SS is a third car in the house for fun driving, makes me grin ear to ear every time I look her or drive her. FWIW, received clear title with just my name on it last week - grin definitely grew a bit

For me spending money on something that I am not financially profiting from is a splurge. That being said any new car is a splurge for different people from different income levels. Let it be an economical sedan, sports car or a luxury vehicle. The moment you get it out of that showroom you have lost money. I do not have a mortgage(I rent) so can afford a loan on a slightly more expensive car of my choice(at least that's what I feel), vs just getting something as just a means of transportation. That being said I did do the math of where I want to be in terms of payments and yes I did wait for the 20% rebate from Chevy instead of spending 48k on the car. At the end it is still a splurge because this is money I am not going to get back, but the memory of driving a power packed V8 is something I will cherish my entire life.

Do you measure your land properly? How many sections must one own to be able to afford this car?

23 years old, entry level engineering job in the defense industry. Make $66k/yr, paid about 41-42k for my 2SS... I honestly don't remember what the final price was, but after taxes, trade-in, and down payment, I am financing $36k. Financed for 5 yrs with a monthly payment of about $630/month. Insurance is $100/month. I had no prior debt -- my parents paid for my previous car which I traded in for $5k, and they also paid for my college (in-state tuition to a public school plus scholarship, so very cheap relatively speaking). So, take that for what you will. Figured I'd share my story for reference.

$730/mo for a car on a $66k/yr salary? Man some people are brave...or just insane.

he's living at home with no debt and a stable job. It's feasible to me (although I paid for mine in full). I had a 550.00 a month car payment when I first moved to Tx out of military on a 10.00 job plus 95.00 ins and 550.00 rent. It was super tight but I made it work. Never again though lol

I'm leasing my RS, couldn't afford to buy it. leasing made more sense to me in the long term. And it allows me to keep my Harley. I'm IT security.

Yeah $550/mo car payment on $10/hr. That's gotta be a world record LOL. I've never owned a car more than $30K. But everyone has been paid for in cash or a lot put down with payments always under $200/mo. The new car thrill wears off substantially. I couldn't fathom having a 5yr old car with a $600/mo payment that I'm almost surely upside down on. Having lots of cash in the bank and not worrying about debt is 10x better in the long run. |

Its mind boggling to see some of the young guns spending $600-$700/mo on such car when they should be soaking as much as possible in long term investments/401K, need to use long time window and power of compounding in your favor when that early in your life. I get 'live a little' mantra but some folks are plain wrong in their approach.
