Entertaining thread to read stories of different folks...everyone's financial situation is different, different stages of life, different priorities

My 2SS is a third car in the house for fun driving, makes me grin ear to ear every time I look her or drive her. FWIW, received clear title with just my name on it last week - grin definitely grew a bit

For me spending money on something that I am not financially profiting from is a splurge. That being said any new car is a splurge for different people from different income levels. Let it be an economical sedan, sports car or a luxury vehicle. The moment you get it out of that showroom you have lost money. I do not have a mortgage(I rent) so can afford a loan on a slightly more expensive car of my choice(at least that's what I feel), vs just getting something as just a means of transportation. That being said I did do the math of where I want to be in terms of payments and yes I did wait for the 20% rebate from Chevy instead of spending 48k on the car. At the end it is still a splurge because this is money I am not going to get back, but the memory of driving a power packed V8 is something I will cherish my entire life.

23 years old, entry level engineering job in the defense industry. Make $66k/yr, paid about 41-42k for my 2SS... I honestly don't remember what the final price was, but after taxes, trade-in, and down payment, I am financing $36k. Financed for 5 yrs with a monthly payment of about $630/month. Insurance is $100/month. I had no prior debt -- my parents paid for my previous car which I traded in for $5k, and they also paid for my college (in-state tuition to a public school plus scholarship, so very cheap relatively speaking). So, take that for what you will. Figured I'd share my story for reference.

he's living at home with no debt and a stable job. It's feasible to me (although I paid for mine in full). I had a 550.00 a month car payment when I first moved to Tx out of military on a 10.00 job plus 95.00 ins and 550.00 rent. It was super tight but I made it work. Never again though lol

I'm leasing my RS, couldn't afford to buy it. leasing made more sense to me in the long term. And it allows me to keep my Harley. I'm IT security.

I guess if you want to live at home. I couldn't wait to get out my parents house and live on my own. I was making $33K/yr at the time. $725/mo rent and driving an older but paid for car. Would take that anyday being stuck at home with a rich man's car payment. But that's me.

Yeah $550/mo car payment on $10/hr. That's gotta be a world record LOL.

I've never owned a car more than $30K. But everyone has been paid for in cash or a lot put down with payments always under $200/mo.

The new car thrill wears off substantially. I couldn't fathom having a 5yr old car with a $600/mo payment that I'm almost surely upside down on.

Having lots of cash in the bank and not worrying about debt is 10x better in the long run.

Its mind boggling to see some of the young guns spending $600-$700/mo on such car when they should be soaking as much as possible in long term investments/401K, need to use long time window and power of compounding in your favor when that early in your life. I get 'live a little' mantra but some folks are plain wrong in their approach.

amen to that brother. I had no choice though back in 2005 when I moved to Tx out of military. I had about 250.00 cash and a credit card with a 5k limit, They housed me for 6 months and I needed transportstion. Bought a brand new 05 Honda Accord V6 within a week (always had very good credit) and got a job 2 weeks later for 10.00 an hour. found a room for rent in a very good area in a nice house with a single mother (who's son was in prison) and acquired another 550.00 monthly debt. I just requested as much ot as possible and averaged 60 hours a week. Did this for almost 2 years and then got a slightly better job. Went form 31k a year to 55K driving trucks hazmat for another 3 years then jumped into the oilfield and more than doubled my pay. For 31 I'm damn proud but also paid my dues and busted my #ss to get where I am now. Yes it feels amazing to be able to buy a badass car and pay in full without worrying about payments etc. Do I have tons of $ in my account? Hell no, need more but I am comfy at least
