Does the GM Nav system require a monthly fee?

Thats impressive, a little over 50 years here and I am almost never where I need to be!

Yes. I'm kidding. But really, I've never used any of it. I guess if I had Navigation in the car, I'd probably use it on occasion. As far as the phone goes, it might as well not exist while I'm driving.

Factory Nav systems are useless after awhile. The manufacturer quits providing updates, and you end up like a friend of mine with a 2004 Porsche Cayenne where entire roads are missing, it routes you down one way streets, etc.

Just use Waze and forget about it. Manufacturers should just integrate phone-based nav apps into the dash the way they have integrated Pandora and the like, and let everything come off of your phone.

During your trip, it relies on GPS. I have driven plenty of times between New Mexico, Arizona, and California and have never had issues with phone directions.
Those apps don't download 100% of the maps you might need or want. For instance you might be zoomed out on your way somewhere, then lose cell service after you've entered cell dead space and now it's impossible to zoom into the maps to show smaller roads and intersections or points of interest.

I'm sure they are on their way if not already there. Just do a random search of the biggest volume dealers you know of. I would try S&J Chevy in the Ceritos auto square. They have been known to stock ZL1s

Actually if you are in northern California disregard, but try the dealers there.
