I've said this before. Like, pretty much every month in this thread. I just don't think this parts bin car (as great as it is don't get butt hurt I like the car) is priced right. GM has said in so many words they are going for higher profits per unit over volume sales. This may be working in other brands but it's obviously not working for Camaro. They need to get these cars moving off the lots. No one wants to see plant layoffs. There's wiggle room in this car. Sure it's an all new Camaro but it's not all new parts from the parts bin. There is shared tech over 3 platforms.
And could we PLEASE stop with the re-sale value and exclusivity argument. These are mass produced modern cars. None of you are sitting on the next Barrett-Jackson goldmine. If GM meant them to be limited production collector items they would NOT be sitting with a 160 day supply on dealer lots. Advertise the damn car. Cut prices and offer some incentives. Get them to some rental fleets so people might try one who wouldn't normally look at Camaro. Problem solved.

Here's the deal. Almost a year ago, I started a thread wondering if a new entry level model was needed. At the time, there weren't any sales figures to justify my concern. Now that the numbers are in, what I was afraid of has pretty much happened. The 6th gen Camaro is a great car; probably the best 4-seat high performance sports gt ever made in America. It has performance that rivals supercars costing much much more. The problem is, the design team gave it the looks of a car in the high $20k's to high $30k's price-wise. It just doesn't look like it performs. If it did, you wouldn't see them sitting on the lots not selling.
IMO they should radically upgrade the looks for next year; leave the performance alone, it's already fantastic. Put all their money and effort into making it look like the way it performs. They'll sell less than the 5th gen because of the price, but they'll sell more than they are now. THEN... go back to the drawing board and create a new model to fit the market segment they've left behind with the Camaro. Keep the Camaro as the premium high-performance model for those who want and will use that. The vast majority, the blue-collar worker that used to be the main customer of the Camaro, is still out there in droves. Create a great looking pony car; inside and out. Moderate performance, moderate technology, but useful. Keep the price in the low $20k range. Give it a new name; they have names they aren't using that they can pull from, but advertise it as 'the good old days... again!' A great looking, stylish pony car that's fun and affordable for the whole family. Basically the old Camaro playbook; again. They'd have a hard time producing enough of them. That vast majority market segment is sitting there waiting. You can see where some of them are going right now; Mustang and Challenger, but those cars are starting to follow where the Camaro has gone and they'll get the same results. SOMEBODY is going to figure it out and take advantage of the opportunity just sitting there, waiting. I would love for it to be Chevrolet, but based on past performance.... who knows? More likely it would be somebody like Kia or Mazda. GM has everything they need; they just need for the people in charge to 'get it' and make the decisions necessary to start the tidal wave.

I think the problem is price. This car was about 5-6000$ more expensive than my Gen V, which I loved. The MRC alone was about 2 grand. But without it, I probably wouldn't have traded. Hopefully GM will adjust the price, but if they don't, our Gen VI will be a bit more exclusive than otherwise.

some people on here are saying they havent seen a camaro commercial yet....i guess GM is just picking which market to target because here in hampton roads, VA i have seen quite a few camaro commercials other than the one with the camaro and 3 other cars that talks about reliability. I also see 6th gens at least once a day.

I think they should put the SS front end on the V6 and 2.0 trims to help spice things up.

I don't know about you but I'm probably not going to live another 47 years to cash in on a 6th gen at auction. And even then WTF am I gonna do with the money at 91 years old LOL.

I'm seeing more 6th Gen's on the roads here in Oregon, a lot more.
Most of my local dealers have 20+ on the lots now..not a single new 5th Gen other than a smattering of Z/28's and ZL1's. |

The only way a Gen 6 will be like a Gen 1 is if somehow, in the mid 2020's, cars utterly lose their excitement and joy like they did in the mid 70's and early 80's. If the continued, ever increasing performance, power, economy, like we're seeing now had happened then, the 67-69's wouldn't be even a 1/4 as valuable as they are now. |
