Hold on I did some research and think I answered my own question.
You're saying this "synthetic" is actually a Group III oil, which is a highly refined mineral oil product that can be called a synthetic but is less expensive to make than a true "made in a lab" synthetic which is a Group IV. Right? I think it is the additive package that Pennzoil includes that makes this oil so well thought of- and the price, 5 quarts with free shipping for $22 from Amazon prime. I apologize if my previous post was in any way offensive- not intended as such, just showin' my ignorance! |

this is great oil. It has a rebate for the year to boot.
Definitely best bang for your buck currently. |

I switched to the Pennzoil Ultra Platinum today from Mobil 1. I haven't done an oil analysis yet but I will do one on the next oil change. Real world testing (https://540ratblog.wordpress.com) shows it to be better than Mobil 1.
Amazon Prime is great. I ordered it Friday evening and it was here on Saturday. I couldn't find it locally. Last edited by TSloper; 08-28-2016 at 05:53 PM. |

Ultra Platinum is what I use as well... with a cam and supporting parts it's a good idea to add Redline oil additive for the zinc content too. Always ended up going to Amazon because Walmart is hit and miss. They usually carry the regular Platinum but not Ultra. And I also found only certain Walmarts in my area carried ultra at all. |

I'm coming up on my first oil change as well and reading threads here and there.
I see people reference Penzoil "ULTRA" Platinum full synthetic and then reference a $22-$24 price tag. The $22-$24 price tag seems to be the [I]regular[I] platinum. The "Ultra" looks to me to be closer to $40 for a 5 qt jug. So which one is the one that everyone is saying is the preferred/better oil? What's the difference between the "ultra" and the "regular" Penzoil synthetic? |

Thanks Glen. BTW, i spent a lot of time reading your detailing info and pretty much broke the bank buying the "required" detailing items to keep my car pristine.

Prices fluctuate greatly on the platinum ultra. It was $27.xx at both walmart and amazon back in april when I ordered 3 containers. Also there was a $10/each rebate, so ~$60 for all 3.

I can attest to the Ultra Platinum being the best oil available at this time.
I've used it for 4 years in a Turbo motor. It saw all kinds of track days, AutoX, Florida heat, etc. I sent every oil change to Blackstone for analysis. They were very impressed with the oil and engine data. I'll be using Ultra in mine.

How long (miles or time) do you guys recommend going on this oil? I won't be doing any track days and drive my car very little. I doubt I will put on 6k miles a year.... previously I put less than 1500 miles on my prelude per year.
Thanks. |
