6th gen V6

~3450 lb/335 hp = 10.3 lb/hp

5th Gen SS
~3900 lb / 413* hp = 9.4 hp/hp
*splitting the difference between the LS3 & L99

The new V6 has about a 10% worse power to weight ratio than the old SS. Thats a pretty big difference.

I didn't have time to post this before, but the only time I've seen the numbers that the OP quoted for the V6 is Chevy's press release for the car. The cars that the magazines have tested tend to be slower by a couple tenths. Meanwhile, I don't recall ever seeing 4.7 & 13.3 for the 5th gen SS. I believe the original press release quoted a 0-60 in 4.4 & 1/4 in 13 flat. Most magazine tests had about a 4.6 run to 60 as I remember with the 1/4 being either 12.9 or 13.0.

So, comparing apples to apples its more like a 0.8 second gap (instead of 0.2).
I agree that the 5th gen SS is clearly faster, and has a big torque advantage despite the weight.

That said, I've been saying for some time now that I think a lightly modified 6th gen V6 could give a stock 5th gen SS fits....especially the L99 models...not as much the LS3 models.

5th gen L99 horse power to weight: 9.75hp/lb
6th gen V6 horse power to weight: 10.3 hp/lb

Next: 6th gen V6 with just 20hp added with mods: 9.72 hp/lb

yes, I know once you start comparing modified with stock it all goes out the window, but my example above shows you really just how close a 6th gen automatic is in weight/hp ratio to a stock 5th gen SS automatic. But the 5th gen SS still has the off the line torque advantage.

I had a 2015 SS convertible for a week last year before I bought my '16 V6. My butt dyno says they are virtually identical, maybe even giving the V6 a slight edge.

I almost bought a '15 SS because they were going off the lots dirt cheap when the '16s starting rolling out. Then I drove a 16 V6 and was so impressed by the performance that I didn't feel the need for a V8.

That coupled with the improved interior sold me! For me, a few tenths is not perceivable unless you measure it or compare it side by side. And I bought the Camaro to enjoy it, not study its performance metrics.

In this review, they got a better time out of the manual they previously tested.

Using magazine times (They're the pro's driving right?) as a reference isn't too bad of an idea. I know I have used it for cars I don't know much about for reference.

Best test is the track showing the 60' and DA. Our fast list has the 6th Gen M6 SS hitting 12.2 or so and 12 flat for the auto (possibly even high 11's). I'm sure theres a fast list for the 5th Gen SS and is there one for the 6th Gen V6?
Off topic, what the hell did you do to your car to make it shine like that, I need sunglasses to look at the screen.

As a L99 owner I am pretty impressed with this new V6 and it surely must be close to my car in performance with the lighter weight and A8. I'm tuned which really changes the L99 trans shifts to make the car shift harder and faster so I have some extra ground there but it likely still isn't a large gap either.

The problem with this statement is that you said modified v6 witch is clear that there isn't going to be any mods for the v6 6th gen. With that said the v6 version is just useless just a great looking car. For now just enjoy the car hopefully by the of the year there will be some SS's hit the used lots.

That 4cyl is going to get a lot of mods though. And before its all said and done will put out more per dollar than the V6 ever will. Not to mention it weighs less than the v6.

There are already mods out for the V6. Trifecta has a tune that adds close to 25HP, Vitesse has a throttle control mod, there are some Cold Air Intakes out there, and a ported intake is in the works. I also know for a fact that someone is developing some exhaust mods because they asked me if I would let them use my car.

Even if there were no mods as you said, which there are, that would not make the engine useless by any stretch of the imagination.

By the time a Camaro Turbo 4 with a lots of "mods" beats my "stock" V6, I'll be driving a new Gen7 Camaro twin turbo V6.......

By the time someone spends enough money for all of those mods, they could have had a V8

Look, I lived the 5th gen V6 scene from early on until this past year. You don't have to tell me there won't be many performance mods available. That's a fact! On my 5th gen I had tune, exhaust, cold air intake, ported manifold, ported throttle body, manifold spacer...and I think that's it, the only mod I didn't have was headers, which is no longer possible with the LFX and LGX engines.

But at the least, there will be:

-tune
-intake
-"ported" intake manifold (already a member here testing these with success)
- ported throttle body
- high flow cats

Tune, intake, and cats alone are enough to get that 20 HP or more. With the high flow manifold, it could be even more. I think all of this together could make for an easy 360+ crank HP V6.

Your statement about it being "useless" is well.....your opinion.

This is true....the lure of the turbo engine.

I defend the V6 to the end, but sorry to say.....just a several hundred dollar tune on the turbo 4 is going to have it beating the V6s.
