Funny how the laws of physics apply differently to enthusiast cars...
When you buy a transportation appliance nobody cares about, like a Toyota, you are told to follow the spec and you do it gladly because it reduces out-of-pocket expense. Even when those specs call for 0W-20 every 10,000 miles whether you need it or not!

My dealer changed mine today at 1500 without argument. The factory oil is DEXOS and the free changes are DEXOS. You can upgrade for 20-25 bucks to full syn. But my dealer recommended staying with the DEXOS until the next change.

I had my first oil change at 2200 miles yesterday. I called the day before and the dealer said they use Mobil 1 full synthetic. When I picked up my Camaro I asked the mechanic and he said DEXOS! Getting it changed out next Monday! Free and a coupon for another free oil change.

10k miles for full synth quality oil like Penzoil ultra or mobil 1 is certainly acceptable for most applications.
It's the filter that requires much more frequent changing which depend on the actual filter performance/capacity and environmental factors. Most people do both because you're right there anyway. But if you dont want to be wasteful I'd replace the oil filters according to the box as an upper limit and let the oil decide when to replace it - starts getting hard to see through - change it. |

Stopped by my dealer and they said GM will not pay until Oil Life is 20%.
And I get 4 oil changes. Hmmmm. Try another dealer or do it myself..... At least he suggested if I do it myself don't reset the oil life. ;/

Thats what I used, and plan to keep on using. I will even bring it to the dealer for my "free" oil changes.

My dealer told me they won't let me get one of those until my oil minder reaches 10%. I had my Mustang 22 months and only put 7083 miles on it so I don't see me getting either of my free changes.

I think I will try another dealer.
Sems like they apply policy differently.

They absolutely do...and why I asked GM Cust service to state the policy here, but they seem to have chickened out....

I don't think you need to worry if "a Dexos oil" is used, at 10qts in the SS it really doesn't matter what you have in the sump as long as it meets the minimums if you are going to dump the oil in short order.
The oil your dumping can very well be better than the oil you are putting in . |

My previous car was a 2012 Mustang GT. The oil life monitor goes off if you exceed either mileage or time. At least it did on my car.

Some of you guys are going to full synthetic. One said his dealer recommended waiting until the next change for full synthetic.
Do we think there is value in running the engine on semi-synthetic until, say 8-10k miles, to make sure everything has broken in as far as it needs to? I would hate to arrest the seating of rings, for example, by going to full synthetic. Am I overthinking this? I know motorcycle engines, but do not know car engines.
