Why are they so expensive? They are just a can with two hoses... $50.00 tops....

I personally went with mishimoto for two reasons (price not being one)
First: Most importantly: This company has laid out research of the products online in these forms from start to finish. No hidden anything. Just strait up facts on components. Bottom line open R and D for us to follow.
Secondly: I ordered the blue one to match my car.

Could I buy it for less...sure. Could I make it look professional...sure. Would it support a company that lays out all the R and D on the table, both good and bad? No.
Thank you for the support! As has been said, catch cans are commonly quite a bit more complex than just a can with a couple hoses. Many catch cans on the market, including most of ours, incorporate filters and baffling and other means of improving the efficiency of condensing oil and gas vapor or other adulterants. Our product for the Camaro SS uses a 50 micron bronze filter and internal baffling to create turbulence in the air and increase the amount of surface area it interacts with to improve condensation.

My friend made one out of PVC pipe, I shit you not.

Stuffed a bunch of steel wool in to catch liquids in the vapor. It only worked "marginally" at best on a Subaru EJ205 (the first USDM WRX motor)...over 20K miles it poured out maybe 3 ounces of liquid caught at the bottom. So yeah it caught some stuff but really not a lot.

I have no doubt that the Mishimoto one I bought is far superior.

There are cheaper and more pricey alternatives on the market.
I like this one because of the fitment and OEM look in addition to their reputation for quality products and R&D behind it.

I gave in and bought one.. Will it matter in 50k miles? IDK.. Is it something to make me sleep better at night, sure... It was 200 bucks, got my hands dirty and I learned a bit.

.
Really depends on the car and how well they control Blow-by, PCV control etc. Some will pass a lot of Vapor and fluids, others not so much.
The LTi has an AOS (Air Oil Separator) but nothing on the PCV side (which is what the Misimoto corrects)..
