Why is a catch-can so expensive? Any DIY'ers?

$180!! Crazy expensive for that little thing!

Anyone make one themselves with good results?

Not that hard to do...Here's a $38 Ebay one I modified for a GTi...
For what it's worth, the VW guys found there was no difference on Valve carbon build-up with or without over 50K (for each set-up). These guys have been doing some extensive testing on this car that has a known Carbon build-up issue. It happened with or without the can.

But if it makes you feel better...................................

$180... some people are selling like $300 dollar ones.

I have a never-been-used ebay one I got a while back when I thought the V6 could make use of one that i'll probably put up for sale along with a drop in K&N filter for the V6 that's barely been used. The cheapy ebay ones lack baffles but they are still effective.

Yeah...You need to put a baffle in them as well as a dispersing media like Stainless steel wool etc..

Only a partial application...Not on the PCV side as I recall..
See Mishimotos site for tech explanations..

it is on the PCV side, as there is no vacuum side. Works fine.

Educate yourself or not...I could actually care less based on some of your prior posts....

Read: http://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=433058

That said, I think Catch cans will do little to eliminate/reduce carbon build-up based on my experience on the VW forums who have done some extensive testing..

From Mishimoto:

"It is great to see that GM addressed a portion of the CCV system with its AOS. Unfortunately, GM has not added such a setup to the PCV-side of the system. From our findings with other catch can projects, we’ve seen that the PCV line produces more oil byproduct than do the breather lines.
On the LT1, the PCV is located on the front of the block, just under the throttle body. A short line runs from the valve to a nipple on the intake manifold.
"

No one else still tripping on not wanting to spend 180 bucks to prolong the life of your 40-50+k sports car?

It won't. A some point you will still need valve cleaning (a function of direct injection). No one knows how long the LT1 will go before this becomes an issue..

In the VW world (2.0 Direct injection motor) a catch can made no difference over 50K miles..

I have always read the oil becomes a vapor at operating temp as it breaks down over time. This vapor is what lands in the intake. It becomes cool again with the intake air and oil droplets form.

The catch cans basically help cool the oil vapor with baffles, longer routing to intake, etc...

Why are they so expensive? They are just a can with two hoses... $50.00 tops....

I personally went with mishimoto for two reasons (price not being one)
First: Most importantly: This company has laid out research of the products online in these forms from start to finish. No hidden anything. Just strait up facts on components. Bottom line open R and D for us to follow.
Secondly: I ordered the blue one to match my car.

Could I buy it for less...sure. Could I make it look professional...sure. Would it support a company that lays out all the R and D on the table, both good and bad? No.
