Going to be very interesting to see how this whole thing evolves as the year progresses.

California's rejected the proposed solution for the 2.0L diesels as insufficient. That rejection's been endorsed by the EPA.
So, VW's back to the drawing board on coming up with a fix acceptable to U.S. regulators. |

Next CARB and the EPA could make people quit driving the cars until VW comes up with an acceptable solution. That would really light a fire in Wolfsburg.

GM has long suspected VW was cheating on emissions.

If there was any suspicion of cheating, it would have been on an individual level not a corporate level. But nothing that I've heard from Lutz indicates that he himself thought they were cheating -and he isn't exactly known for holding back when asked for his opinion. Side note: in that same After Hours episode, he talked about the dictatorial leadership style of Ferdinand Piech (former VW CEO). How he had to get everything he wanted, or you'd get fired. In that kind of environment if you're presented with a technical impossibility (such as 'produce powerful, efficient, clean diesels without using DEF') with no option for failure, the only way forward is to cheat.

Now the EPA is going to have to check all Diesel engines for defeat devices

I'm not sure I fully understand all this other than VW tweaked the computer to show one set of numbers while being tested and another while driving. Really no differant than what many members of this forum do with tunes and aftermarket parts. Now I agree it probably isn't a great idea for the manufacturer to do it.
My question is with this tweak how much did fuel efficency increase? Would you as a owner want to bring your car back to the dealer for warranty work which you know will more than likely result in a drop in MPG, and possibly power. I would not period. Is this another case of the EPA being the end all say in what they feel is correct whichever way the political winds are blowing. Does the EPA check all cars in this exact manner or did it single out VW? If it doesn't how do we know the vehicles which we are driving could hold up to this scrutiny?
