This has been rumored for about a year. Wait until the other shoe drops...there have also been rumors some manufacturers are "fudging" their FE ratings. That includes gasoline engines as well. This may explode and hit many car companies.

If the EPA levies the maximum fine you can probably kiss VW goodbye in the US.

I've heard, should maximum fine be levied per vehicle, just for those within the U.S. alone the fines could reach 18.75 billion. The numbers I saw were approximately 500,000 cars and a max fine of 37.5k per.
That was on another forum though. So take it with salt lick sized grains of salt. I have also read that, even with the proposed fix, that the cars in question will still not be emissions legal within California. So, there's a bunch of California VW owners with a rather large, actionable, issue to resolve. VAG as a whole is so large that I doubt the company itself will go away entirely, but the VW brand? Yeah, they're in some real trouble, not just in the U.S., though I wouldn't be surprised to see them withdraw from the U.S. My understanding is that some of the Audi A3's are impacted by this too. No idea of the numbers there. |

This is a product of governments trying to force things before the technology is there to make it happen.
It forces companies to cheat to survive. I would be willing to bet that things like this won't stop with VW. |

They won't, they almost never levy the maximum fine (which in this case is 18ish billion). Odds are it will be several hundred million to a couple billion. Which is still a lot, but won't put much of a dent on VW's cash reserves (which I think are in excess of 25 billion) and could be recouped within a few months.

Everyone else manages to comply with their diesels without cheating. At least that we know of.

That's just it. Who knows, but I could see more of this type of stuff happening with how strict things are getting. We've seen things like this in the past when the rules have changed rather quickly. I've seen it in my business. All I'm saying is, just because someone in Washington decides that this needs to happen by a certain date, it doesn't mean the technology is there to make it happen.
