The registration and doc fee are normal. Tire tax is dumb but it's legitimate in nj. it's only a few dollars so no one ever makes a big deal about it. The gas guzzler tax this dealer is fabricating is concerning though. There is no documentation anywhere that this car has a gas guzzler tax yet they are trying to charge you for it? I'd be very cautious of this dealer since they are making taxes up.

Thank you. My concerns exactly. I think it is just ignorance on their part, but we will see when I go in with the government fuel economy paperwork showing that it doesn't have a GGT.

I think that it is important to note that the actual sales agreement hasn't been written up yet. He could have just been jotting things down to give me an idea of what the final price will come to. I have it all in an excel spreadsheet to check with the final.

If the state requires it, then it might be legit. One of the reasons I left that state years ago..

The GGT IS NOT ignorance on their part...They are just trying to pad profits..
Betcha they hit you on more stuff before this is over.

Yea, I am looking to move to PA within the next few years. I am not a fan of NJ either.

As far as the dealer goes, I am ready and expecting it just because they are a dealer (I don't trust dealers).

I would love to! Ultimately I want to move out west where its dryer. PA is about as far as I can go right now with my job. The warmth must be nice!

I just checked my purchase agreement. There is no gas guzzler tax on it. There's the price I got, the $1k conquest rebate, sales tax, etc. But NO GGT.

Yup... do not pay it. BTW, the conquest rebate expires 2/29 so take delivery by then..

I know there's nothing you can do about it now, but stuff like this makes me more and more happy I went with Rodger's to get the car. $126 isn't much, but it's apparently exactly the same as them taking it out of your wallet while you use the restroom.

Be funny (sort of) to ask them exactly who they remit that money to when you give it to them. And then call that agency and ask WTF.

Thanks for your response. How did the conquest rebate work for you? Is it $1000 that gets removed from the out the door price? Rebates get taxed in Alabama correct?

Technically the purchase hasn't been made yet. They just marked it down as purchased for me to get the $1000 conquest rebate.

Looking at the purchase agreement it goes like this:

Price I negotiated on car +
Sales tax +
license +
registration
-----------------
TOTAL CASH PRICE (it has it capitalized, so what the heck)

Price I paid is:

TOTAL CASH PRICE -
Deposit -
Other Credits (this is the conquest rebate)
------------------------
AMOUNT TO BE FINANCED

(I didn't finance it, I brought a check with me for that amount).

So, the conquest rebate comes off the price + sales tax, same as if someone gave you $1000 to apply to the purchase.

Interesting. That almost looks like you should pay state and federal income tax on the $1000.

If I have to pay income tax on the rebate, I wonder if I can deduct the price of my airline ticket to go get the car. That was $576. :(
