I did upgrade the original charging module in 2019 when GM came out with a new unit with more power and better compatibility from a different supplier, zero problems since then.

So the auto play function from my normal Bluetooth connection was normal. It would start once I've started the car. This usb link is waking up when i open the door and it is making the car think i plugged in a usb cord to my phone. When i haven't even sat down yet, much less started the car. I dont mind it being auto play its just kinda different than how the Bluetooth link worked.

I have the same “problem” with mine. I have one of these cheap amazon wireless CarPlay dongles and when I open the door it will start playing music.

Well I obviously can't be 100% certain that this AA setting is what's causing this with you guys' cars, but as bishopts says, the USB port you plug your dongles into powers up as soon as the driver side door is opened, so technically your phone is able to connect at that point (AFAIK the radio is never fully "off" as long as the interior has power).

I guess I never asked the most obvious question: is the music that starts playing when you open the door coming from the phone or SXM/FM/AM radio?

If i't the phone, it's interesting, becase then your dongles are miraculously fast to start playback so soon, I've never seen one that was so quick to boot up and connect.

In my experience with any car, Bluetooth connection negotiation takes a few seconds, and my specific dongle (AAWireless) first links up via BT, then establishes a WiFi connection with the phone for a proper link speed that allows navigation and any other data intensive apps to work smoothly.

Our Nissan, Mazda and Infiniti vehicles (various model years from 2014 to 2022) are all waaay slower to connect to any phone than my Camaro, by the way.
