Chevelle is like one of those rumors that never dies though, right? It actually could make sense if the initial demographic is people who are old enough to know the name. That demo probably has the money for it, the knees/back pain to keep them out of a Corvette/Camaro sized sports car. And would likely be positioned as a direct competitor to the new Charger, distancing from the Mustang.

Additionaly, replacing the Camaro nameplate in Nascar 2027-2028 with one they've used before.
Chevrolet Impala
Chevrolet Monte Carlo
Chevrolet Chevelle
Chevrolet Nova
Chevrolet Caprice
Chevrolet Lumina
Chevrolet Bel Air

I think Malibu is a long shot. Most drivers associate Malibu with a practical midsize. Most drivers (other than those of us of a certain age) don't even have a reference for Chevelle. I think it would be more difficult to change people's thinking of the Malibu brand than it would be to work with Chevelle as a blank slate.

There are enough people who recognize Impala as a car that ranges from practical family hauler to kick-ass performance car. So my thoughts in order of likelihood are:
  1. Camaro
  2. Impala
  3. Something completely different
  4. Chevelle
  5. Malibu
Similar to what they did with the original ATS and CTS, I’m holding out for a sedan/coupe family. Basically just doors and a body side which used to be 50 or 60 million.

Impala in th3 past had a 2 and 4 door.

GM has an affinity with old names (generally pisses people off eg Blazer) and retro styling which works for your boomer customers. GenZ has no clue, as you pointed out, what a Chevelle is and the last several Malibus have not been anything that would be actually confused with performance, although I recall a Malibu MAXX SS.

Malibu Maxx SS

That is literally the point where Product Development said "We've gone too far". There were guidelines set identifying what could and could not be called an SS.

I'm guessing you probably remember where the original CTS, STS, DTS names came from.

Catera Touring Sedan
Seville Touring Sedan
Deville Touring Sedan

And for a bonus...Alpha Touring Sedan.

Oh it pained me to have worked on that Malibu MAXX but the liftgate was pretty cool using Super Plastic Formed Aluminum.

And yes the SS badge was put on 2.0T versions of the Cobalt and HHR. Yikes.

And less than fond memories of those Cadillac names. Just not sure they are really any better now.

And yes, Alpha was an architecture that did some awesome stuff. Just poorly executed in products. For example the CTS version of Alpha sat 1” higher than the competition simply due to wheel size making step over height worse.

But hey, they should be way smarter this time around.

I had not looked at this thread thinking it was just another spoof. But instead a trip down memory lane. The Lumina Z34 was one of the memories I had successfully blocked- thank you very little but O/W I've been LMAO.

That Cobalt SS with a manual trans was a pretty fun car. No argument on the HHR though.

That car with the GM approved tune was something special. I put that in my Sky Redline. With the manual that was an awesome car devoid of an interior.
