What does covering the VIN # do?

If they can pull your vin up then they can get the access to creating a key before they even open the door. Once the door is open then they just hook up to the obd2 port and finalize the key learn setup. Then the car is gone.

This is on par with the "I drive a manual, millennials won't attempt to steal my car" mentality. Bolt cutters are easily concealed by a duffle bag. Throw on some gym attire and nobody will pay attention. And you can bet the more times these a-holes encounter The Club, the more they will adapt. Keep your guard up and don't let these clowns win!

I was thinking the other day. What if you just took your gas pedal with you when you park? They are usually only held in with one 10mm and a hook. So if you made the bolt a quick release then you could just pull the pedal easily.

But again, the visual deterrence of MULTIPLE clubs should clearly indicate the owner has gone far and above this very basic deterrence and you are VERY likely in for a very steep, uphill road to get this vehicle, which would be correct thinking... My point with the clubs, they are there to avoid them breaking my window in the first place, because they aren't getting my car, regardless... Unless they drag it on a flatbed, then you can have it... I'll take the insurance money and run...

I've updated how I install my "Clubs" which virtually eliminates the ability to drill out the locks (as there isn't enough room for a drill)... EVERY little thing you do increases the chances of retaining your vehicle...

I didn't think of this earlier but here in Texas our registration stickers have the last 8 of the vin on them. That's what's needed to access vehicle specific info to create a key.

Just want to add to the discussions here that depending on what trim you have and whatever theft deterrents you have, There is one last way that you might want to think about how your car could be stolen. Even if the thieves can't drive your car away due to gas pedal not working, or even some kill switches, especially ones that just interrupt the starter, or something else.

They will merely put into neutral and push it down the road with another vehicle. They will move it to a spot where they have a bit more time and cover to investigate what they need to do to actually be able to drive it. Obviously this is less likely at noon surrounded by people then at night with no one around. Only takes about 3 to 5 seconds to get one of our cars into neutral, especially if you're not worried about cosmetic damage.

Like how they used to do before key hacking became easier. My coworkers silverado SS was stolen like that.

Pretty sure you can also just look in the windshield where it meets the dashboard or the door jam after you break into the car.

Most people cover that with a card or something.

Depending on the jurisdiction, I think that can be a moving violation.
