Possibly an opportunity there to localize the smell or melted area.
Your problem sounds electrical. Bad main ground or positive battery connection somewhere. One of the big guys. Bad connection or damaged wire is source of high resistance causing overheating of the wire. It is probably a connection, and seems to be vibration dependent, as you are able to get it going fine for a bit, then it just dies on you. The unfortunate reality is intermittent electrical problems like this are often hard to localize, as the fault cannot be easily replicated. If something melted and they can see it, you will have your answer. Thermal imaging camera might help. Unfortunately not a cheap tool, but dealer may have one: https://www.amazon.com/HSFTOOLS-HF96...zcF9hdGY&psc=1 Last edited by ctrlz; 03-15-2025 at 09:35 AM. |

Check your heat shield on the starter and make sure it's not touching the positive cable connection on the starter. Mine was.

I had this exact same issue a few months ago. Dealer had to replace the whole engine told me I spun a bearing and caused the engine to seize up. Hope this isn’t the case for you but your experiencing exactly what I had to deal with.

You are handling this well and have been patient it seems. This totally sucks and it be pretty bent and disappointed. It's not the dealers fault, but I think it's totally ok for you to be frustrated to hell and back. I love my baby but if I were in your shoes, I wouldn't trust the car either and do my best to somehow unload her. Maybe GM will buy back the car. I truly feel bad for you.

Got the word today from the dealership........engine is locked up. Looks like I will be getting a new engine for the baby.
Will they install a High Performance engine???? Should I ask what engine will be installed?? |

Hopefully they will get you back on the road in a timely fashion, and they should be replacing it with the same as originally equipped.

And that is also the easiest route for the swap. I would love to know what exactly happened, but probably would not ask too many questions until that new engine is installed. Glad they are replacing it. |

The quality control on these post covid cars seems to be garbage/hit or miss. I do not remember earlier cars blowing up this much. Idk maybe I’m not remembering correctly but I am probably not keeping mine past warranty.

I believe there is a TSB for the bearings in almost all the LT engines from like 2022-2024. I thought it was more of a truck engine problem, but seems to be some of the car engines also. Guessing they had a bad batch of bearings from one of their suppliers. Not a good thing…

dealership saying "engine seized" might not mean what we assume. Duck does not have a list of all the diagnostic steps. Someone on this forum would take the engine apart. Dealership just has steps to justify replacing the engine. That could be a tech and the service supervisor both saying, "yep, doesn't crank. It's seized." I don't know the protocol, but I bet it does not involve as much as you think. Frankly, a starter pinion jammed against the flywheel will keep the crankshaft on a perfectly good engine from turning.
That's why I say get the new engine in first, ask questions later. |
