My thought exactly while looking at the pics. Especially if someone else drives who might not understand just how bad those tires are for snowy/icy conditions. Especially at 85,000 Miles (I do gotta say, I'm impressed at that life span!)

Glad everyone's ok, though! I'm sure the car will be missed :(

As for the tires, put 85,000 miles on it though 4 winters with no issue. Its about knowing what you got and the limits. Practicality is another story....

Loved that car....
Limits of a tire not designed for cold weather, snow/ice, and even when you're down to the wear bars?
It's a fact that summer/race tires are not designed or even recommended for use under 45 degrees as the rubber is not soft enough to provide traction even on dry pavement.

I second that!

Traded my M6 ‘17 ZL1 for a ‘23 M6 CT5-V Blackwing last spring and haven’t looked back.

Dare I say the 5BW, in my opinion, is the best performance car GM currently builds. Yes, even better than the C8 Corvette of which I own one.

If only they would make a two door coup.

Sorry to have that happen.
The important thing is your dad didn't get hurt.
I'd be curious to hear more about how the engine let go at 80,000 miles.

Main bearing flailed, the car had oil issues its whole life. All was covered under warranty. GM gave me a full component warrantee out to 110,000 miles when the car sat in the shop for 3 months very early stages of its life.

Car info:

6 speed with a carbon fiber hood insert in garnet red tint coat.

Got it new with 6 mile on the OD, put just over 85,000 miles on it. Summers full of hard driving including about 4 to 6 hard 1000 mile rally's a season.

Did you state in an earlier post you got 85k miles out of the F1s or are we interpreting that wrong?

That might be my bad! No way, I would get 15k if I was lucky out of them.

Had no issues driving on them in the 85k life span of the car.

Never had all seasons or winter sets, I would drive them down to nothing basically. Now in doing that I knew when NOT to beat on the car. Lots of miles granted me the feeling of the limits.

Conditions on that day where less then ideal for what tires could handle, my father had almost no experience in the car but the temptation was to great...... (who doesn't like to hear the supercharger wine LOL?)

I had left the car at home on that day because of the conditions, dad needed his meds and took it to the pharmacy, just a couple of miles from my place. The perfect storm of bad conditions, and not knowing what

the car is capable of. Also, im pretty sure he hit the tc off button trying to get the parking break off. He is used to his 66 vett, no buttons to press......

Ah, mis-read it then. gotcha. was gonna say, only way to get 85k miles out of them is for the car to be on jackstands, lol. I got 9800 out of mine before being told they would have to replaced before it would pass inspection.

Well I am for one happy your Dad is ok and safe. I am also happy to say that if you need any help considering the damages you can see, THINK about the items you CAN NOT SEE when dealing with a suspension impact such as this. If your car has the PDR system, you can download the Cosworth Data Recovery software we use for tracking our car's data on the race track to see all the data leading up to the airbag deployment.

This is where your insurance company like Progressive might give you more friction than your tires did... if you decide you want to push the fact of repairing it, versus them cutting you a check, they may lean on your policy waivers and exclusions for someone driving the car. AND... in this thread you admitted he took it without you knowing. Just saying, I would rather see the demise of a ZL1 by Family than at a Street Takeover Theft!!

LMK what you decide... see what they offer as a buy-back. It might be quite fixable with all the ZL1s in insurance storage facilities right now and the plethora of OEM ZL1 parts on Marketplace is overwhelming!!

I gave him permission to take the car. As it stands right now, dad was added to the policy for coverage. Progressive took a week to add him, the tow yard is connected to a body shop. The owner (of the tow yard and body shop) took the car into the body shop. The adjuster is heading out to inspect the car on site. Body shop thinks it may be fixable, Progressive wants it totaled from the sounds of things. At this point all I can do is wait. Totaling out the car would be the most beneficial for me personally. I would lose 20k in resale with a airbag deployment on the carfax no?
