Can you please include the format everyone uses for those last two AIM Solo posts? The same format you used to post your Road America time, and I'll happily update. I see one is from VIR. Where is the other post from? Which track?

Random question, do you like Barber more or Road Atlanta?

I think so. It's hard to say until I've been to the same track more than once.
I really like Road Atlanta, Watkins Glen, Barber, But if you made me pick between RA and Barber right at this moment I would say barber. RA is higher speed and more elevation, barber is much more technical. |

2023 Track Road Trip - Stop 1 of 8 - NCM
I realized that I never added these videos to the list after my big track road trip last year and wanted to share the story to go along with the videos. Highlights are in bold for those who understandably don't want to read the wall of text.
I decided to take advantage of working remotely (which was not guaranteed to last) along with using my vacation days to plan visits to some tracks and other places/people far away from Texas where I live. It got out of hand and I ended up going to 8 different tracks I'd never been to including driving on the last 5 new tracks in a span of just 7 days! I drove my Camaro over 7,000 miles in 7.5 weeks between the street and track and spent just over $2,500 on gas! (Plus 2 flights back home while the car was stored.) I met some cool people and really enjoyed the trip although it was challenging at times and I definitely think it improved my driving. I would recommend others to limit it to a max of 3 tracks in a short time if you plan something similar to help reduce the possibility of something going wrong and leaving you with paid non-refundable entries and a broken car which thankfully didn't happen to me except for 1 day at Mid-Ohio. hpdejunkie.com was a very helpful resource for trip planning but it appears to be down currently; not sure if it will come back in the future. Thanks to everyone for posting their videos on here; they really helped me prepare and get up to speed faster at all of these new tracks. Backstory: I had a time crunch while getting ready for the trip. While inspecting the car before the trip, I found a rear toe adjust bolt was coming loose. I forgot to re-mark it with a Sharpie or paint pen after it was reused (should have been replaced since it is TTY) during an alignment about 5 months beforehand and it was apparently not tightened enough. This caused damage to the ears on the other side (closer to the front of the car) so I had to find a shop to bend them back into place and reinforce the back with welds (same problem that this person had). 2 of the 3 rear hub bolts on that corner were also coming loose causing an intermittent creaking sound (probably caused by the loose toe bolt) which I had previously dismissed as jack stands moving around in my trunk until I finally took them out after a few months and the noise didn't go away. Access was difficult, but I was able to tighten the bolts up without removing the suspension links using a bunch of U-joints and wobble extensions and mark them with a paint pen...they haven't come loose again. The washer on the bolt was chewed up by the loose bolt and I had to drive an hour each way in traffic to get a replacement on short notice. I replaced the 4 rear alignment bolts with new ones and went for an alignment but the tech was inexperienced and unable to get my rear toe in spec and their steering wheel centering device was missing (which he didn't tell me beforehand) so I ended up with a crooked steering wheel. Finally the next morning I went to a different location and after waiting a few hours I got an experienced tech who was able to hit my specs and tighten the new bolts correctly to the factory torque + angle values I provided. I marked the bolts with a paint pen and hit the road with my car packed full of spares, a 2nd set of SS 1LE wheels/tires, and clothes. It was early Friday afternoon and my event started on Saturday morning at NCM in Kentucky so I drove over 800 miles straight through from Texas to Kentucky just stopping briefly for gas and dinner and arrived late that night thanks to light traffic. I was originally planning to split that drive up into 2 days. What not to do: At some point during the weekend, while changing front brake pads, I accidentally pushed in too many front brake pistons at once without looking (I had taken both brake pads out at once, now I only take 1 out at a time to prevent this) and some brake fluid started dripping past the a piston seal and I couldn't get the piston back in because it was touching the rotor. Thankfully I was able to quickly remove the caliper bolts with my battery impact and push the caliper against the rotor to re-seat the piston before I lost much brake fluid and I sprayed everything down with some brake clean that I brought. If it was the original bolts covered in red Loctite I probably would've been unable to loosen the bolts and helplessly watched as my brake fluid dropped below the minimum mark and air got into the system. I switched to orange Loctite instead of red and it has worked well for me with stock brake pads. With no Loctite, the bolts started to come loose over time. The car was oversteering a lot throughout the weekend as you can see from the video and I finally figured out that the rear toe link bushings were probably worn out. I had SPL toe links with eccentric lockouts installed after this and they fixed the excessive oversteer which had gradually gotten worse over several months leading up to this. Just make sure to replace the outer knuckle bolts and torque them to the shop manual spec rather than the lower value in the SPL specs and check the tightness of those bolts regularly so you don't snap a bolt like I did after this trip! I had a big moment in turn 16 on Saturday trying to carry too much speed on the way in and applying the throttle very aggressively...I dialed it back after that: https://youtu.be/pc6cUn9YZ_0 (around the 43 second mark in the video) I also had the surreal experience of passing a Ferrari 458 (driven by a novice) in the combined happy hour session: https://youtu.be/9ATUoskE_Kc NCM is a great challenging track! Overall, I think I did ok for my first time (second day) at NCM although I was overdriving, missed some apexes, and overslowed before turn 1. There are a lot of relatively flat usable curbs. I found about 2 seconds during the first session on Sunday after reviewing PDR videos/data in Cosworth Toolbox on Saturday night. The ambient temperature was ideal at 49°F and I think rising temperatures were working against me as I tried to improve later plus it was hard to get a full lap without catching traffic in a bad spot. Track = NCM Motorsports Park - Grand Full (National Corvette Museum) Time = 2:18.08 Year/Model/Trim/Trans = 2017 1SS 1LE M6 Date = 4/23/23 Tires = OE SC3 Mods = Track alignment, BMR BK063 Diff Lockout, FEA front lower front control arms, 2021 SS 1LE EBCM, SRF, GM track brake cooling kit I had half of a lap that was a few tenths faster in the second session but I caught traffic in a bad spot: https://youtu.be/OGcu296eXfY These 3 videos posted on the track's YouTube page offered very detailed/helpful advice on how to approach each corner: https://youtu.be/rwyt1MPFqlY https://youtu.be/nHnEeAEgm10 https://youtu.be/2J5SddnHPdw Last edited by cdrptrks; 12-07-2024 at 11:11 PM. |
