I had plenty of time to experiment with this with my G5 LS3 and the G6 LT1. For whatever reason, the LT1 will lug a little more if I short shift it too much, compared to the LS3, so while I could nudge the LS3 into 6th even a little slower, the LT1 does want a few more revs, so yeah, you don't drive it at 1000rpm, nor am I advocating that. Where I notice another difference between the two is the 1-4 skip. The lighter weight and increased power of the G6 with LT1 is absolutely noticeable and it was a lot more sketchy in the G5 LS3, as in it would bog much worse.

But back to the RPMs, you will not bog at all going into 6th at 50mph, unless you are going up a hill. If you give it gas and it's not accelerating, sure, you are bogging, but this engine makes around 300lb/ft at ~1000rpm, it handles it just fine. It's not hurting anything. You obviously aren't doing that to get on a highway, then it makes more sense to hold on to a lower gear for longer, but if the speed limit calls for 50, it's plenty happy to cruise in 6th gear, again as long as you aren't hitting a big up.

Besides, when the engine is cold, you want to keep RPMs low, until it's warmed up a bit more and the engine oil temp is showing some life. But on the highway or on a parkway, you can be cruising all day long below 2000rpms. This ain't a 4cyl or v6. You are absolutely right, for those engines 4 and 6cyl as far as RPM range. This one is perfectly happy to turn at 1700 on the highway. I mean, you are literally telling me, from your RPM, that you're driving in 5th or 4th gear on the highway. I assure you they designed 6th gear for the highway, even when the limit is only 55.
Yeah until my oil warms up I generally don't shift above 2,000 rpm.

On back roads where I'm doing say 40-45mph, I'm definitely smooth crusing in 5th no problem, unless a steep grade comes up like you said. This car doesn't bog unless it's really low rpms, which is why I prefer 1-3 over 1-4. Even at the 1,300-1,500 mark you can feel it's not struggling at all.

That said, I can get some pretty amazing mileage out of it. A month ago I did a 2hr drive, with tires on my cargo rack, to AutoX, then back on the same drive. I eeked out 26mpg total, including the race. I remember my best-ever with the Gen 5 going cross country and this Gen 6 gets about 2mpg better than that, which is pretty damn amazing running 305 section tires and having the aerodynamics of a brick.

As I said above, I felt the 1-4 was worse in the Gen 5. It seemed like weight/power just wasn't enough to push it over the edge as practical and this one does much better, much better pickup in 4th when doing it.
I hear you. I know the gas guzzler tax was the reason for the skip shift, but why they couldn't add just a slight amount of RPM is what's weird. I guess that was part of the deal they had to get it to pass. But it sure bogs then at slow speeds.

And it's amazing what these engines can do in terms of MPG. The best I've ever got on a long trip is just over 30. Then around town, depending on my foot, I've gotten in the twenties countess times.

I also had a 5th Gen SS with a M6, but I can't remember the difference. I just remember it was dang low as well.

I agree. I've driven a lot of manuals in my years, and after getting used to my 6th gen and how it responds I go to 6th gear at 50 all the time. I've tried it at lower speeds, but that's the sweet spot for this motor. Anything around 1000 RPM is not a problem.

And, like you said, it's not hurting anything if you're just cruising along with a light throttle input. The only time it will bog is with a bit more throttle to accelerate, and if needed I just hit 5th or 4th.

I'm getting close to 111k on my LT1, and it's as strong as ever.

Down here I was able to get ~40ish mpg in 6th gear at 45mph using cruise control on a smooth road.

It's exactly like the 1-4 skip, except your RPM isn't as low even as the 1-4, so not sure how you can make that claim.

I refuse to do any cruising in 6th under 60MPH. It just seems like too low RPM for such a tall gear.

But, that's me and my car. We all bought the manual so we can shift however we damn please! (That does include me by-passing the 1-4 skip every time)

I don’t know what 1-4 skip is….. I eliminated mine as soon as I bought it

Yeah I wouldn't recommend people start cruising around in 6th gear at 45mph. With even the slightest of inclines or acceleration the engine sounds like it's struggling. However at a constant 45mph everything felt fine. I was just bored at 1 am on the way home with no traffic.

I think we can also all agree that no one who installed the Skip Shift Eliminator has regretted it and most of us who put off installing the darn thing regretted not installing it sooner.

Agreed, wish I installed it sooner.

It was a real pain removing the OEM harness from the side of the trans. I used a pick tool to try and reach around the top of the harness but it wouldnt let go. I finally jammed a flat sided file and pried it off from beneath and it came out.

Mine was super easy to install. At the first free oil change I handed it to the tech and said, "Mind installing this while it's on the lift?" He did so with the blessing of the mod friendly service manager.

I would say that the skip shift eliminator was the most important add on mod that I did for my 6MT it makes a huge difference on how you drive the car. I love it. Without it, I hated how the skip shift system interfered with my shifting

I've done the skip-shift dongle on a '98, a 2010, and a '23. Almost Immediately. I realize these cars are end-of-life; but I'll add my rants here.

I've read infuriating comment threads elsewhere of people rationalizing driving around skip-shift. In all of human history, it truly represents the peak of human folly.

It's been a while since I did mine; but as this video summarizes: for the tight clearance of the Gen6, JUST USE A HOOK TOOL.

If it were the only way to get it, I'd pay 5 grand for this mod, or flush my warranty down the toilet if necessary. But it's not. It's peanuts off of amazon. If you can safely lift you car, stop reading now and go do it. If you can't, get your oil change guy to do it, though you should not wait that long just pay a shop $150 to lift your car up and do it, today.

You're welcome.

The psychobabblers should read the threads where people describe how to work around skip-shift, tales of how to punch the gas or shift into some other gear to save themselves the (greater?) nuisance of installing a $20 part.

not one of the 3 of my skip shift cars needed a skip shift eliminator. So I guess add me to the SSAS.
