For a track day tire, they can't be beat for the price. For a DD, pick whatever makes you happy.

As others have posted and I'm going to just confirm it. These tires work in a narrow window of temperatures and scenarios. When they fall out of these parameters, they are horrible. The falloff is massive. But, when you use them in their designed temps/conditions, they are pretty awesome tires! I have rare occurrences that I may need to drive the car in light rain so I will be swapping to summer tires that can handle a bit of rain. The goodyears lasted about 7-8k for the rears and I am still on my fronts at 17k. So you can go 2 sets of rears to 1 set of fronts unless you are diving corners really hard.

Great tires for hot dry conditions only. Also they wear out quickly.

They do wear out quickly, I will agree.

Great on warm dry pavement only. Suicidal on wet and cold surfaces.

EDIT- Apologies,
GOODYEAR EAGLE F1 ASYMMETRIC 3 RUNONFLAT, I do not have these tires and have no opinion. My GOODYEAR EAGLE F1 SUPERCAR 3 have been through more than summer dry weather with zero issues.

First rule....never live in a place that has the so called "winter". I'm on my second set and never experienced any badness other than the previously noted "sucks in rain and cold temperatures", my personal experience is both can be a pretty slick ride, but the cold is worse. I tend not to drive fast in the rain regardless of the vehicle, all of them can hydroplane. I just change my driving habits according to the weather. Tire construction failure has never been a problem. Daily drive my car and for the few days a year it affects me not really a hassle.

I'm on my 4th set of SC3'S. Just picked up some SC3R also.
Love them. Dry grip is amazing. They are a summer tire. Not for rain or cold.

Look at the cars each person drives when considering their responses. Camaro SS 1LE comes with Goodyear Supercar 3 tires. They're 220 treadwear, great on track (road course), fine in the rain as long as they're not low ok remaining tread, and are recommended by Goodyear not to be driven below 40°F although I have personally driven on them once when the car sat outside overnight in high 20s°F and they were still drivable at highway speeds.
Camaro ZL1 1LE comes with 100 treadwear Supercar 3R tires that are very track focused and barely street legal. I would pull over (or leave the road course session early) I'd it started raining while I was driving on these tires since they have very little tread even when new. When temperatures are in the 40s°F they're very sketchy but they will warm up eventually after several laps on track but you have to be careful for 5+ minutes. They're very different tires but both fall under the Goodyear Supercar name. I have been through many sets of Supercar 3 tires and never had cracks or sidewall issues even after hitting some major potholes and using lots of agressive curbs at different tracks. I think cracks generally come from storing the cars in cold winter weather and/or driving on cold tires before they warm up. |

Also 5th gen Camaro SS 1LE had Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G:2 tires which are another different type of tire under the Supercar name. I have no experience with them but the reviews you were reading back in 2012 were probably for those tires.

Finally, the tire that comes standard on SS non-1LE models does not fall under the Supercar name. They are Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 3 RunOnFlat (ROF aka runflat). You should start a new thread with the correct tire name if they're the ones you meant to ask about. I have driven on these tires in 3 different Camaro SS rental cars and they're fine in the rain even a heavy downpour (they had plenty of tread) and they grip well when cornering on backroads. I can't speak to their cold weather performance.
Any tire will hydroplane if you don't have much tread left. I've hydroplaned in a front wheel drive econobox on nearly bald all season tires on the highway in the rain. I am willing to bet those who commented about the tires being terrible in the rain (excluding Supercar 3R) had low tread. At 2/32" when the wear bars are even with the rest of the tread you have reached the minimum legal tread depth in 42 states. Tires become much more dangerous in the rain with low tread due to hydroplaning and increased stopping distance. Last edited by cdrptrks; 08-16-2023 at 05:07 PM. |
