Sorry, I don't understand the disconnect here. This is the solution we suggest:

1. buy Range device and plug it in
2. enjoy no AFM as long as the Range device is in the OBD-II port
3. come inspection time, unplug the Range device from the port, which takes your car back to stock (AFM enabled) with zero trace, no CEL, no foreign device in the port, no nothing
4. cruise to the inspection station and pass with flying colors
5. when done, plug your Range device back in (and AFM will be disabled again)

That's it. Don't touch the AFM hardware at all.

Actually, you are going to want to pull the Range device about a week or so before your emissions test or it will not pass. It takes like 100 or so miles of stop and start driving to clear the codes.
Been there, done that.
That’s how the Range device blocks AFM, by fooling the computer that it’s not ready to enter AFM mode.
Don’t get me wrong, the Range is a good device, just know that you need to be thinking ahead at emissions test time.

Not certain what codes do you mean? I drive into the inspection station, unplug the Range, get the inspection done, receive the thumbs up and plug the Range back in, all good to go. I’ve done this on two cars, over the years, Maybe Mass isn’t looking for something your State is? I’m kind of curious now, as I always heard there was no trace after pulling the module.

According to my dealership service guy (same place that does emissions testing), for emissions testing, all systems have to be in a “ready” state. I’m told (right or wrong) that the range device defeats AFM by blocking that ready state. When you re-enable the ready state, the computer might not recognize the ready state right away.
I pulled my Range device right before testing and it failed. Service guy said drive it for a few days with several start cycles and bring it back. I did, and it passed, without doing anything else.

I pull it ahead of time now just to be certain.

That’s good info…I didn’t realize that. I actually did Google search that confirmed what you’re saying. It sounds like some people have the “ready” issues, while others do not. But, like you, I’ll start pulling the module well ahead of time, just in case (sounds like I’ve been lucky). Thanks..

The Range units say not spec for newer years. Regardless I bought one. I have a 21’ and it works fine. Never pulled a CEL.
