I figure at the speeds he was traveling, and some person making a lane change, he didn't have time to react, which is one thing that people going this fast fail to realize. All it takes is someone making a move into your lane. They don't anticipate some crazed lunatic hurling themselves down the highway at such speeds, and you're going too fast to react. But yes, he's going to be paying for this for a long time, which is fine by me. |

Just think how many incidents like this we will see when EVs take over. In a few years, all but the bottom of the barrel, entry level offerings will annihilate a 6th gen Camaro in a straight line while weighing an extra ton or so and not handling any where near as well. I'm not anti-ev, but I do believe incidents such as this will become more common when the family SUV or sedan is capable of knocking down 3 sec or better 0 - 60 times. Lots of more affluent kids will be learning to drive in cars that will run 9 - 10sec in the 1/4 mile.

Sometimes it's easy to tell what members on here get their "news" from Qanon.

If they tapped into the ECU they'll know exactly how fast he was going and they may have already done that. I'm not sure why some would question the speed if they actually looked at the other Suv. Why question it if the air bag indicator makes it possible to tell the speed at impact. Lets not have sympathy for this kid, but maybe some for the family.

A lot of people (myself included) complain about how cars aren't built the way they used to be. My father had a 67 Cadillac that literally made it unscathed against a hail storm that generated softball sized hail. Those hail stones ripped through the rest of our cars and made them look like very fat woman thighs. Of course, today's cars are made the way they're made for "safety standards". I mean I'm sure the auto industry likes that they're not having to invest in so much steel, but the crumple zones are actually created to absorb a lot of the energy in the event of an accident. The safety beams surrounding the interior are meant to withstand the impact. So while the crumple zones hopefully do what they are meant to do, the rest of the car with the occupants will stay relatively intact. I'm personally waiting for "securefoam" like on Demolition Man, but I can see it now, people purposefully getting into accidents in an attempt to activate the foam. |

I am really surprised the level of damage was not worse. Even with the velocity vector in the same direction that was a violent collision. Does it look like the lincoln caught fire ?

If you want to see what a 100mph impact looks like here you go. Skip to the 55 second mark. Now imagine 157mph in a Camaro. Just not seeing that Camaro at 157mph when that impact occurred. Damage profile on the Camaro doesn't fit. Here's another one: And this one wasn't even a direct hit.

I guess you have to factor the physics of both cars are in motion moving in the the same direction and both will absorb some of the impact. Any physics majors?

From an excessive speeding perspective, sure, you build up speed pretty quick with EVs but you can do the same in a Toyota Corolla if you have enough runway. Most EVs are quick down at the lower 0-60mph speeds and don't pull nearly as hard above those speeds, with the exception of the Plaid.

I grew up in very small towns with with long straight and open roads and little to no traffic. I drove a bit reckless here and there, but I don’t think I ever broke 100mph. It just scared the hell out of me. Now it’s more like 80mph that scares me. Different brain I guess.
