Should I look to consider replacing mine? I just picked up a very low mileage 2017 2ss (9k miles). I heard that kills the battery because the previous owner let the car sit for most of its life. My last Camaro was daily driven and I got a solid 8 years out of it never replacing the battery.

Did anyone who replaced their battery see any changes to the "Slow crank" issue? I have a 2016 that has done an occasional slow crank since I bought it new. It has ever failed to start, but now it is six years old,and it makes me nervous.
Thank you. -Geoff

I have a 2016... Still on the original battery. I'm not sure why you'd replace a battery just to replace it? You can tell when a battery is starting to fail, they don't normally just all of a sudden die. If you have an older battery and wondering, go get it load tested at your local auto parts store. I wouldn't replace it just because... That's just me. Wife still has her OEM battery in her 2015 Impala.... works great.

Did you ever put the extra ground cable on like I suggested to you last October? If you are skeptic look through my thread on it. This has fixed just about every hot start slow crank 2016 SS car that is out there once the ground cable is added. It's not magic or folk lore. The factory ground from the engine to body is inadequate for a heat soaked starter. The extra cable reduces the resistance enough for the battery to spin a heat soaked starter.

The comment about batteries not failing all of a sudden is absurd. Of course they can fail with no warning. You're asking for trouble with a battery 5 years or older. I don't like to replace a good battery for no reason but you risk getting stuck somewhere if does. I carry a small jumpstarter just in case.

Factory battery failed at about 2.25 years on my 2020. Wouldn't hold a charge and eventually wouldn't crank. Think I got a bad one. Replaced with new AGM and now cranks faster than ever.

A battery can fail suddenly, like with an internal plate separation. I've never had that happen. More likely is gradual failure goes unnoticed until it hits the tipping point and can't crank the car. Also most mechanics are probably going to recommend replacing a battery when the connections somewhere were bad. No customer wants to hear, "I tightened the connections on your 4 year old battery, you're good to go!" It's better for business and can be viewed as preventive maintenance to replace the battery. Not that big a price tag either. personally, I just wait for electrical quirks anywhere on the car and check battery voltage when that happens. Fortunately batteries are date-stamped. Once it hits 5 years I just replace it if there is any question. |

![]() I think you will be happy with the result. The Gen 5 cable is a thick one! If you use the same bolt I did - please read my first post. Otherwise you will lose tension on the serpentine belt if you take that bolt out all the way. As to batteries I am 3 years on a warranty replacement and going strong. The dealership replaced the original battery as their answer to the hot start slow crank problem - which only solves the problem for a few months until the fresh battery weakens a little.

FWIW, '17 with the original battery, still going strong.
However to put that into perspective, I added a 4 gauge booster strap to the battery ground (through the current sensor of course), a similar strap from the engine block to the frame, and an 83.3 farad supercapacitor bank between the under hood fuse block jump terminal and the frame. Each of these things helped the starter to be noticeably more "responsive". I did these same things on my wife's truck several years ago and its battery is still going strong too (and it cranks very rapidly). +++ on the Antigravity batteries BTW. If/when I need to replace mine that's what it will get. I have been running LiFePO4 batteries on my bikes for years and swear by them. They weigh almost nothing, are super powerful, and do not appreciably self-discharge.

To you really want to have a battery failure at a rest area at 11:00 pm on the New York Thruway? Reason that I ask is that it happened to me in my wife's minivan. Guess what? AAA does not service the Thruway and no-one answers the Thruway phone at that time. So now it's prophylactic battery replacement for me! |
