The various controls and monitors that are all along the pipeline could be vulnerable as well based on who owns the network circuitry (and what sort of circuits they are) along the route. If it's LTE, that's an even bigger can of worms to be worried about.

This is one of those things that's "simple" to fix until you really get into it and find all of the actual logistical challenges that go with it...

So, Colonial system is down because hackers are demanding a ransom. So are they negotiating with someone? Trying to fix the problem and pay no ransom?...

I've heard hacks and ransoms are pretty common. My guess, they will likely pay-up and it usually is in the form of bit-coins...and we'll never hear the details.

Any how, I'm sure this pipeline ran fine somehow without computers. Hopefully someone remembers how to actually make something work without software bs...Good luck.

That is mostly the gist...just gives the local government more authority during the "crisis" to keep the "peace"

It essentially ensures panic and a shortage will occur.

Huh, so I'm not supposed to put gasoline in a plastic bag and huff it while driving around?

I can appreciate the "software bs" sentiment, but it really isn't "bs". There have always been monitors and controls in place. Today, there is software that actively monitors them and reports things back to central locations, removing the need for someone to actively looking at mechanical gauges. And, with the various systems inter-connected and actively communicating with each other, small issues can usually be managed instead of turning into big issues.

As far as the ransom goes, my understanding is that the operators have made zero information publicly about the demand or their intentions, but apparently a portion of the line may have been brought back on line?

I live just outside of Raleigh, NC. I just took my daughter to work and it is 15 miles away.

Passed like 10 gas stations. Only 1 had fuel.

I firmly believe that if the various state governors had NOT declared an emergency, this would NOT have happened.

If you ever hear someone say "I am from the government, I am here to help", just run away, you know it isn't true...

Oh, and the local news said that 3 out of 4 gas stations in the greater Raleigh area are out of gas.

I know this was filmed a year ago...

But you just know someone else has done this in the past 24 hours...

you dont have to hack integral systems to shut down a company ... just take out the billing system. They're not going to keep the product flowing with no way of billing for it.

They're also probably not going to operate extremely volatile chemical handling systems while they aren't sure that the very visible and potentially external only facing system has been hacked until they know for sure that internal systems haven't been impacted. The few days of disruption is far less than the fallout from running them and finding out the hackers do have access and they cause an incident resulting in damage/death etc.

We've known our industrial infrastructure was totally open to hackers for decades now -
Companies wont invest in fixing something until they absolutely have to (after it costs them a bunch of money when it fails).

The state of Florida just issued a RVP waiver to accompany the EPA waiver. This should open up a bit of existing supply in Florida at least. The waiver allows the sale of Winter grade fuel through the end of the month, providing a more broad source of supply.

Crazy times we are in! Good luck!

Like clockwork my VB friends and my NOVA friends couldn't find gas yesterday or were barely able to get any.

No, you are much better off putting it in a styrofoam cup or even better fill up one of those big styrofoam coolers
