Brake Sticking
Guys quick question...
Dont drive the ZL1 much. It is garage kept. I try to drive it once a week but sometimes a few weeks goes by. Today we drove it. Left front pad was stuck to the rotor. The caliper was not stuck, just the pad. It pushed the tire across the floor till it hit the driveway and then "broke lose" so to speak. Anyone have any issues like this or a way to prevent it? I know I know drive it more and that wont happen. It does not get put up wet but has been really humid here. Any ideas? -Krawl |

Mine does that too whether it's wet or not after sitting for a week or so.
It only took so long for it to unstick itself since the garage floor isn't as abrasive as the road or your driveway. Don't know what you can do to stop it other than to drive it more often. I mean, these brakes are very good so they're going to "stick". It could just be from pressure building up in the reservoir causing this but I don't know. |

Weird. I don’t drive mine for sometimes weeks. I left mine out in the backyard all winter without moving it. No brakes were hung up at all.
You watch, now that I have posted this it’ll happen this weekend when I go to drive it.

Happen to me once, I washed the car and put it away and set the emergency brake. I’ll never do that again. I always take it around the block after a wash and don’t use the E brake when storing it for any time.

What if you do this before parking for a long period... stop car in garage, then get out and roll car forward or back a few inches to the spot you prefer. So the car moves after brake pedal is released. Then only put in gear, no e-brake.
Maybe that will make no difference. I only had this happen after washing and it was only lightly stuck, not like you described. I never go more than 1 week without driving the car, I guess that's sad, no long trips in last 2 years. |

The ZL1 has iron rotors and when not used for any length of time, they will create a thin layer of rust on them, thereby sealing the pads to the rotors. Happens to me occasionally, after I wash the car and leave it set for a week or more. There really isn't much you can do, other than move the car every couple of days.

I have also had this happen on a few occasions.
I made the mistake of washing the car to prep it for winter and then drove it straight into the garage. 4 months later when spring came I found the rust as so bad it had severely pitted rotors where the pads had been in contact during storage. This unfortunately compromise the brake system for track driving, I found a big decrease in brake performance after this. For street driving the pads were just fine but I could not get them to bed in properly after that incident which caused poor performance at the track. I ended up using a light abrasive material to clean up the rotors as best I could and installed new pads, I could then get the brakes to bed properly. I can still feel the pitted rust spots through the brake pedal at threshold braking, so I will have to replace them at some point. Lesson learned, after washing make sure the brake system is used enough to evaporate any water between the rotors and pads.

My ZL1 is the same way when it’s been raining and sits overnight or a few days later. It’s under a carport that is open on the side and front(attached to the house) and sometimes if the rain blows in on the passenger side then the right front pad will stick too. Guess it’s just something us ZL1 owners have to deal with!

It doesn't appear as though you track the car, if not, swap the pads to a ceramic composition. they won't stick to the rotors as bad if at all.
