Yeah but how does a bad batch of pumps span 10 months?

pretty easily. they questionable part is produced in put into production cars on the line which are then shipped to dealers. car sits on the lot till its purchased and then driven for around 2000 miles how ever long that takes the driver. then problem presents itself if there is going to be a problem so at this point you are probably at 5 to 6 months before any failures are reported. Just rough guesses but see how it can happen...

Not that it matters but its a little less at around 8 months. Melling made the pumps from what I read in here, and that some trucks had issues too telling me they probably had a few bad batches probably but eventually things were sorted out? Im no expert, just another armchair assumer on the internet.

Uh, no... The attached invoice shows Warranty...

My car is 2 years old with only 16,272 miles on it. So, definitely within the warranty period.

I don't think you understood my question. Even though the work was paid by GM under warranty, I was wondering what the dealer would have charged him if it was a cash job. Maybe that was listed on the invoice?

It was not listed on the invoice. The only thing I cut off was my customer info at the top. What you see is what I got when I picked the car up.

I may have missed it but how do they know for sure there was no engine damage? did they run a compression check?

Mine went last night. 2018, Build date 8/17, 2700 miles. Been a garage car for me, plus putting it up for winters. Glad it's over. Been reading about this for months and it finally happened. Worried about driving it to far and being stuck somewhere. Was lucky and pulled into my buddies driveway. Saw the gauge at 0 and knew exactly what happened, just as everyone described. Only 1 mile from a chevy dealer and had it towed there last night. Now we wait and see.

Do they need to remove the engine to replace the pump?

No, but doing it in the car isn't appreciably faster or easier than pulling the motor
