Even the LS7 is a small block. 427 small block. Nasty engine. My buddies Z28 is badass!

the 396 was mostly a 402 and it was a rat engine or big block with a massive 4.84 bore spacing.

396 was 396 until 1970 when it was bored .060 and actually displaced 402 but still badged as a 396. This was the original mk 5 big block and my all-time favorite motor for purely sentimental reasons. My first car was a '66 L78 Chevelle, triple black, m21, 4.10 12 bolt. Got mine from the original owner in 1976.

This thread sucks without pictures.

Dad went with me to check out the L78 Chevelle that I ended up buying at 16. He heard those solid lifters clacking away and was convinced that the motor had issues and that I should pass on the car. That wasn't the first time I did not heed his advice, but probably was one of the very few times when I was actually in the right!

Goat, it looks like we have similar taste in Camaros. Mine's hyper blue with silver rally stripes. Can't tell if yours are white or silver but our rides are pretty similar nonetheless. What car was your 396 in?

Mine are white stripes L78! Believe it or not I found a 72 Pontiac Lemans with a 4 speed and a blown up 400 ( sorry about the GTO stickers LOL. I had a 2006 GTO...hense the signiture!). I went to the junk yard and found a 396 / 325 hp and rebuilt it with a L88 cam (solids) intake / Holley 750 double pumper. 17 years old! Quite a learning experience. Your L78 was a pretty rare 396.
