Its not the shops fault brother. This is a GM issue from what ive read. But to anwser your question. The shop is definitley taking care of me. Couldnt be any happier with the customer service That the Redline team has provided me.

Yikes I was thinking this was only an issue on the ZL1's S.C. engines

Hey, guys. Checking in here and amazed that this thread has become so popular. I am the original poster of this thread and had no idea there were others with a similar situation -I did also think I was the only one .

I am the one who started this thread after my 18 oil pump failed. After waiting three weeks for the dealer to screw around and repair the damn thing I never was able to get the truth of the matter of what’s going on with these oil pumps and to this day GM has not come clean . This was my third General Motors product purchased brand new all three of them turned out to be complete lemons . I ended up selling the Camaro because I was wanting a vehicle I could trust and modify and have fun with but if you can’t get the basics right from the factory like an oil pump then you are really playing with fire unless you want to buy all of the parts and labor and when things fail , since GM will not fix your car for free under warranty if you’ve modified it . All of us ZL1 owners know how much cash we dropped just to purchase the car and I was looking to put another 15 or 20 grand into it and decided it was not a smart move .

anyway I hope GM will finally either recall all of the V-8‘s with this part number for an oil pump or at least modify the oil pump to stop failing,,,I’m really sorry to hear everyone who has posted here are with a failed pump. I hope my experience was the worst of anyone’s.

Man i Hope mine is Good. I have an 18 A10, with build date of 6/18. It’s one of a few Camaros in our garage. My wife has a 4/5th gen anniversary editions, and are planning on doing power tour this year together and I want to take the Z. I assumed that because it’s the newer one of the bunch I’ll be ok, but now I’m worried with only 3200 miles on it I don’t need it to fail while in a road trip, and beating on it like it was made for. Maybe my IROC would be a better bet LOL. It pisses me off that GM is lacking in the quality control DEPT. We have always had GMs in the garages and driveway. Her daily is a blazer RS and I have a Denali pick-up. Hell after reading all these failures (hoping I’m safe with a 6/18 build) I’m almost thinking I’m better off taking the 4th gen that I’m building for drag week this year just to do the power tour.

Yes, it does suck that you can have a known oil pump issue with a mfg, still be under warranty but get no assistance because you had your car tuned.

A good dealer won’t do that to you for this failure. Loose a piston or a valve spring with a tune and that’s a different deal, but good dealers understand this failure can’t be a result of a tune.

There are lots of GM homers that have tried to claim this is a super rare occurrence. It's anything but rare. I don't think it's so much a matter of if your pump will fail as it is WHEN it will fail. So many of these cars are not driven many miles and I think that plays a role in leading people to believe it's uncommon. (Mine is an 18 with 2300 miles) The fact is, lots of pumps are failing well under 5k miles. Owners are completely justified in being terrified of a failure and GM has good reason to avoid a recall. It is an expensive fix, even assuming it doesn't take out the engine as well. In that case, you're really screwed without warranty. I really don't think I can financially risk owning this car out of warranty.

Back Home...

Just to close the loop on my car...I picked it up last night and what I will say is GM and my local dealership handled this right. From the get go the issue was taken very serious, handled professionally and quite frankly outright courteous and empathetic to a situation that really shouldn't be happening for us.

In the end I really hope this is a one time issue and that it was a bad batch of oil pumps because if not then it would not be worth owning these after warranty as it is way to expensive of a fix when they break. Let's just say I'm doing a 500 miles break in of a new motor courtesy of GM.

While LT4's seem to be disproportionately affected, LT1's are certainly not immune. Has anyone heard of any failures on L86 trucks? They have the same short block and I'm sure there are many more high mileage trucks out there yet I have not heard of any failures.

I assume that's your opinion. No way do you have data to support such a statement. I see 40 listed. How many hundreds do you personally know? How many thousands are on the road today? Now, do that math.

I’m sure as soon as i type this my oil pump will crumble, but you guys should spend some time in GT350-land and see the carnage of 2-3 kabooms per week at times. I promise you’ll feel the LT4 is indestructible afterwards.
