Here is my breakdown and reasoning behind the oil viscosity uses:

5W 30 is sufficient for NORMAL street drivability, i.e. normal freeway driving, grocery getting and stop and go traffic. Down side: 5w 30 evaporates more than heavier weighted oil under heavy use. This oil also thins too quickly under repeated heavy use due to moisture and unburnt fuel blowby. 5W 30 will thin after 1 or 2 heavy use cycles and will no longer perform like a 30 weight oil.

0W 40 is for the street warriors and track use: track course, freeway pulls, drag racing, roll racing, normal freeway driving, and even grocery getting. Down side: The cost of this oil is expensive. Drivers should allow for at least 2 minutes of warm up time after starting a cold engine. Must use PF64 oil filter for flow and for warranty.

15W 50 is for guys that perform: heavy freeway pulls, launches, heavy track course, heavy drag strip, heavy roll racing, heavy freeway pulls etc..Down side Over prolonged use, this oil does not lubricate as efficiently as 5w 40 or 0w 40. This oil requires long warm up times from cold starts. This oil does not play nice with cats. IMO must use PF64 oil filter due to heavy viscosity of oil because PF64 has larger inlet holes..even bigger than PF64R. Must use PF64 oil filter for flow and for warranty.

I think the majority of readers here fall into the 0w 40 catagory!!

The oil cap says. DEXOS 5w30.
What the heck gives ???????
5w30 Dexos is what I would do in Colorado for street driving. 0w40 is a slightly higher viscosity (and ~2x the cost) and what I use in FL for same.

You do realize that a 5W30 has a higher viscosity at cold temps than a 0W40 right?

I think the debate between 5w30 or 0w40 depends on where you live and how you drive. I myself live in NY and don't have super high temps alot. So I might benefit from using the 5w30? 5w30 is thinner at cold start this coating the engine components better sooner. Yes 0w40 would be best for hard driving and track.
Does this sound right?

5W30 has a higher viscosity at start-up. It's the 5.

The SAE classification for multi-viscosity oil consists of two viscosity grades, such as viscosity SAE 10W-30. The first part of the grade (10W) is the comparable grade of the single viscosity oil that features the oil’s weight at cold temperature.
The second part of the grade (30) is the grade of the comparable single viscosity oil that defines its viscosity at 212 degrees Fahrenheit. You should note that both parts of the multi-grade SAE classification are not viscosity values but grades.

I went to my local Chevrolet dealer yesterday and confirmed what I can & can't use for motor oil. Based on my 2019 ZL1 Convertible Vin# this is what the parts guy printed out for me.

The 5W-30 Dexos 1 Gen 2 GM motor oil is also reasonably priced ($6.29 CDN) versus the cost of the Mobil 1 ESP 0W-40. If I was going to be heavy footed and drive the pants off the car, I would consider using the Mobil 1 0W-40.

15W 50 all the time. Not switching back to 5w30 for a few weeks and a hundred street miles between track events.

I've been putting nothing but Mobile 1 ESP 0W-40 in my ZL1 since the summer of 2018. I found there is a small but noticeable difference in acceleration smoothness and over engine performance with the 0W-40 versus M1 5W-30. Even though I don't track my car, I feel the performance gain from the 0W-40 oil is worth the extra cost.

I thought that it was the placebo effect.
