Dave, does your 2018 manual call for 10.5? My '16 says 10, with filter

It's been over a year so I could be wrong, but pretty sure it's 10.5 in the manual.

I just checked the manual for the V8 it's 10 quarts (page 345). Page 48 of the High Performance Manual Supplement says the same thing.

The manual says 10 but my 16 SS always takes 11 quarts. My 18 Zl1 says 11 quarts and it takes 12 quarts
If you remember the oil pickup tube recall the engines don't all use the same oil pans or they wouldn't have said to check the number on the pan as to whether it needed replaced or not. I think the difference is there but not really sure.

Four quarts down the filler before I noticed the puddle spreading out from underneath.

Did it! A couple of times when I was a heavy truck tech, luckily never with a personal vehicle. One of my coworkers took a refer truck out for a test drive after doing a PM the same week I dumped oil all over the floor, but he actually forgot to put any oil back in it! This was pre-cell phones, so he had a nice long walk back to the shop in the dead of winter...

Checked the high performance supplement for my 2017 ZL1 and it stated that it takes 11 quarts with filter change! Learned something new today!

Well...if 10 qts is good then 11 Qts must be better.

Actually I reread the specs and it is 10 quarts not 11 like I posted. Got it confused with the cooling system fill which is 11 quarts. It’s been a tough week for me at work and home!

Ok, thanks... still always takes 10.5 though.

During my last oil change, I added 10 quarts. I started it and let it run for about 30 seconds. Came back 2 hours later and it was showing 1/2 low. Decided not to add any and went ahead and drove like normal for the day. Checked the next morning after it had sat overnight and it was full. I think you just need to add 10 quarts, drive for a bit, and check at a later time after it’s had time to fully drain in the pan.

I have never experienced an oil capacity that is greater than the manual states.

There are several factors that will get you a wrong dipstick indication after an oil change.

One: not running the engine. The oil filter has not filled up.

Two: running the engine for too short a time. The oil has not heated up and will not drain down any time soon.

Three: The oil has not finished draining down. See two. Even when the engine is fully heated up, you need to wait at least 15 minutes for an accurate reading. If all you did was go for a 10 minute spin, see "two".

Over filling sucks. Give the OM the benefit of the doubt. Put in the amount in the OM and then go for a nice long ride. Check the oil the next morning. You will not be disappointed.

I really appreciate everyone's feedback and boy does it look like it is a controversial topic haha You well get some that can't get past a manual and others with experience. Welcome to the internet. If you came here and looking for the right answer let me debrief. Put 10 quarts in and dont check, take it for a ride and come home. let it cool down and see where you are. whether it is 10 or 11 quarts let the car settle after a ride and go from there is the best advise I can give.

Four: The dipstick tube is only partially inserted into the block. This is typically a press fit, and I have had at least two cars where the fit was either loose by design or the tube got mangled when installed. It would pull back a bit every time I pulled the dipstick.
