Agreed, especially if you aren't a dedicated racer. If you get used to the power both zl1s and 1les can be modded relatively inexpensive for a little bit of extra power and you can keep building up to keep it fun as you get acostumed to the power.

Using 455HP is tough to do on the street but I would still like to have the extra 200. Is it worth $25,000 more? Maybe. Be nice to have.

Roughly, how much were the ZL1 cradle bushings installed? Might consider them.

He made it pretty clear why he posted it here as well. His reason is validated as already, someone who only looks at this section of the forum has gained value from it. Why do you feel the need to be a jerk and try to sound cool on the internet by criticizing something that causes you no problems and is of value to others?

Got bored today and decided to go test drive the ZL1 1LE. My local dealer has 3 of them.

Let me start by saying that the last time I test drove one was when I was thinking of replacing my lease-end M3 with one, before I knew about the SS 1LE.

So, lets get the elephant in the room out of the way first...

RIDE QUALITY:

Now, my M3 had Ohlin coilovers on it and was pretty stiff and harsh around town. Driving the ZL1 1LE at that time was actually a bit of an improvement over the Ohlin set-up I had.

Fast forward to today and after 6 mths of SS 1LE ownership...

You get spoiled by the MRC!!! Damn, the ZL1 1LE was pretty harsh now by comparison. For driving around town and a quick jot on the freeway, the damping didn't feel any better than the MRC, although I am sure it would with triple digit speeds, but damn there is a BIG ride quality difference. You bounce around A LOT more, you forget just how good the MRC is.

I also have the ZL1 1LE solid rear cradle bushings upgrade, so the ZL1 1LE didn't feel any more solid that my car does in that regard, but from a stock SS 1LE and remembering what it felt like before the upgrade, the ZL1 1LE does feel more solid feeling in stock form in the rear-end.

POWER:

Wow, so much quicker feeling, but you also have to be careful. Between those tires that need more time to warm up and the added HP & TQ, mashing 1st is a no-no. While I enjoyed the added throw you back in the seat feel, I think the SS 1LE is more satisfying to drive off track as even with the tires not up to temp, you can still pretty much mash the throttle in 1st gear and just go, as long as it isn't 30 degrees out.

Also because of the added HP and TQ and supercharger, Track Mode throttle mapping doesn't feel nearly as anemic as it does in the SS 1LE.

The clutch pedal has a stiffer feel to it and takes a little more muscle to push in, probably because of stiffer clutch springs to adjust to the added power.

EXHAUST SOUND / LOUDNESS: This only applies to aftermarket exhausts, since I have the Corsa Cat-back system, but going back to a stock exhaust, it sounded weak by comparison, I just love the sound of the Corsa system over stock.

Love the wing from the outside, but damn, it is right smack in the middle of the rearview mirror, not optimum for daily driving.

FINAL THOUGHTS:
The ZL1 1LE is BAD ASS, but I choose the right car for me in the SS 1LE.

Since the dealer let me test drive it and I didn't want to be a total dick and just say bye, I decided to let the dealer "run numbers" just for fun. They offered $30K for my 2SS 1LE with 8K miles on the clock. LOL.
Thanks for posting this here as I'm too low brow for the ZL1 forum.

Agreed, I was on the fence on getting a zl1 or a SS 1LE, the ss was easily in my price range as a daily driver and the ZL1 was there but I would have some cut backs. I appreciate the review from someone that has a SS 1Le and drove the ZL1, honest opinion and not trying to sell one over the other really help someone like me make a decision.
If you dont own a SS 1le or a ZL1 1LE I really think you "opinion" is pretty much shit. JMO
I just quoted you mates, agree 100%

Interesting conclusion. Thanks for posting your thoughts here. I wouldn't have seen it otherwise.

The bushings themselves were ~$400, I got mine from Wildhammer Motorsports and the install was like $1,000. It's not the easiest job but I had a great race shop do it and they did it right.

The difference was worth the cost and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

Holy crap. $1000 to install the cradle bushings? Huh. I was going to do the entire underside of the car in one shot. I may have to wait a bit to reassess which parts I want.

It depends on where you go and the method on which you to do it. I didn't want my rear cradles heated up , which some say makes the process easier. The shop I took it to, sawed the rubber and pried them out without heating the rear cradle.

I didn't want to take any chance on metal fatique from the extreme heat but yeah, it's not the most mod friendly labor wise, but still worth it.

If you're a 5/10 mechanic you can do cradle mounts yourself, a few guys have done it on here and while it's time consuming, it's not all that difficult.

It's on my 2019 list of things to do to the car if you want to come hang out in Orlando while i do it to see what is involved. ZL1 1LE DSSV suspension will probably go in this weekend or next.

Thanks for posting this here as well. I've actually been contemplating going to test drive a ZL1 just to see how it feels with the extra HP/TQ.

It was LGR that did your rear cradle bushings right? How was your experience with their employees and opinion on their shop? I think when I do anything to my 1LE i'd like to go to them since they're so close.

OP: thanks for the post, very informative.
As I've posted in another thread, I had a 2016 Z06 for 2 years. I really loved that car, but it was way overkill for me as a DD. It was ridiculously fast, looked amazing, sounded incredible,...But I felt that it was a bit heavy, I had a 2002 Z06 and 2006 Z06 before that, and those cars were appreciably lighter. The 650/650 on the 2016 were overkill. I'm itching to get back to a V8, and the Camaro SS 1LE is at the top of the list. I previously had a 3rd gen and 4th gen Z28, so I'm familiar with the F-body. I think the SS 1LE has the right balance for a DD. Now all I need to do is decide on 1SS or 2SS, and of course color.
