Ive generally discovered a long time ago, you can't have that convo...there are those that insist on rowing gears and getting in high gear as quickly as possible and then groan about "drone" because they insist on a gear that gives them the lowest possible RPM range.
...and, FYI...if you're thinking about stretching MPG in the a Camaro SS you're a blooming idiot. |

Sixth? Whose uses sixth? That's no fun. Lol the government and their fuel economy rules are the only reason we have 6. I might use 6th if crushing at 100 on a long flat road. Lol

Down here, I hardly ever find myself in sixth. Later at night, when the highway is clear and I'm hitting 70 or so, yes, but it's 5th most of the time.

If you want a full tank's worth average to be under 10, you need to greatly vary your speed on the highway as well, cruising will be too efficient, "unfortunately".

I fail to believe that everyone here is constantly accelerating and if they are buzzing along at 70 in 5th then it's pretty amusing to me.. It doesn't bog at 50mph in 6th when accelerating UNLESS you push the gash down all the way or are on a steep uphill. I like accelerating when it's time to accelerate, but I'll just go directly to 3rd from 65 or whatever. Why would I want to be in 5th? That's just dumb if I can burn less gas when cruising and when I want to accelerate, I really want to accelerate.

Well it seems that there are two types of drivers here. Those that stay in 5th at highway speeds in order stay in the power band, and those content to stay in 6th because its better MPG and the engine has enough torque to pull it off. I'm still left wondering if there is any real engine damage occurring when accelerating in 6th gear at low RPMs. I want to believe that as long as the car is able to accelerate, that there isn't much load being transferred onto the bearings/rods. I just wasn't really sure.
In general, I just drive the car. If I want to cruise in 6th and occasionally pass without down shifting, I'll do it. Sometimes I'll do a downshift to 5th and play around a bit. But if I'm on a long road trip, I really want to know if just leaving it in 6th is okay. Because as someone posted, the manual clearly says to NOT LUG THE ENGINE at any time even beyond break in period. It must be there for a reason. And I find that in my daily highway driving, in my attempt to get good MPG in 6th gear I do regularly encounter myself "lugging" the engine. |

Factory 1-4 skip shift should at least give you an indication of what isn’t lugging. If you can get an increase in rpm with partial throttle application, you’re fine.

The factory is having you shift to fourth below 20 mph.

Lower gears get torque multiplication. 6th is .5:1 and IMO it's best to downshift if you're giving more than a touch of throttle or are already going pretty fast. But hey, it's your car...
Those who cruise on the highway in 5th should have got an auto. |
