Can Dealer void my Camaro 2.0T at 6100 miles with some basic mods?
Hello Everyone,
I have been busy modding my Camaro 6 last 2 months. Iam scheduled for my first oil change tomorrow. Could dealer void my warranty by inspecting my car and seeing couple of mods off the bat? So far I added : ZZP silicone intake tube,K&N drop in air filter,ZZP larger throttle body kit.Borla Axle back S-type exhaust. Sorry for asking a dumb question. Because most of my cars before, I waited until warranty have been expired. I just couldnt help myself with this Cam 6. It is such a fun car to drive and modding it. I will try to figure out how to download some picks and video. TIA.

Different dealers will give you a different decision. Many of them won't have a problem with this, but some will. And when they say no, even if they're wrong, it will cost you more dollars to prove your point that it's worth. So go interview the service manager and he'll tell you how he feels… That's not right, but that's the way it is.

As said some will care some won't, and that has to be your direction. Don't say you've modded, of course, but hint that you're thinking about it and see what their reaction will be. Some dealers are cool with minor mods if they do the work, some let you put the parts on, some are pains in the butt. Depends on the circumstances.
Some will say the Magnuson-Moss act will protect you, but it specifically does NOT. The M&M act says the manufacturer can't void your warranty if you use aftermarket parts that are designed to perform the same form, fit and function. In the case of an air filter, this makes sense - but when you put on a cold air intake, it's "obviously" not the same form and fit so it can be used as grounds to void part of a warranty. Also any excuse you have of "the intake tube failed so I replaced it" isn't valid because during the warranty period a manufacturer will provide one to you free of charge. Some manufacturers are even rolling the cost of maintenance items into the car to ensure that you go back to the dealer for the free oil changes and other basic services, all to make sure you go with them. At the end of the day if GM voids your warranty, they have a team of lawyers on their side on retainer so if you have to pay a lawyer by the hour to take your case, you'll pay more in lawyer fees reinstating your warranty than the warranty is actually worth and they know it. As they say "ya gotta pay to play". |

Long as your not tuned and haven't messed with internals or displacement your pretty well and good and have little to worry about.

The only way the ENTIRE warranty will be voided is if your car was totaled or considered a loss. Dealers don't void warranties period. They deny coverage of a claim based on an aftermarket part being installed that affects that. If your wheel bearing is making noise, the intake will not cause them to deny coverage. If it throws a lean code, they will deny coverage most likely based on the aftermarket part not performing as factory like was said a few posts above.

Service managers at Elite status GM dealers can in fact place a block on your power train warranty with minimal assistance. I just talked to my service manager, he told me in 32 years, he has only done this twice. It really just comes down to you as a customer, and how you act/respond. If you take your car in for warranty work, odds are the service manager will never even see under the hood. A technician would have to inform him of modifications first. At that point the service manager may or may not decide to cover your failure under warranty. If he decides not to cover it because of xyz modifications, take it as is, don't freak out on him. You did make the decision to modify, and its a risk you take. But I'm with Evil-Bee-NH, the risk is minimal at best, especially if you keep cool about it.

Good news..I bought my car in with no issues. They did the oil change and I was out of there within 1 hour. Thanks everyone for responses. I should only be worried moving forward if CEL comes on. I will then switch all the parts back to stock when I bring her in.

I have the worst dealer in the country. They would blame absolutely everything on simple little mods.
Rack and pinion leak? My 22" wheels (1 inch over stock) Engine oil leak from timing belt? My catch can. My compressor dying? Florida heat. Okay the last one wasn't pinned on me per say, but they claimed everything under sun as excuses why warranty doesn't cover. This was my last (5th gen) camaro. I will not be going to that dealer again for my 6th gen. I recommend scoping out dealers who aren't trying to pass the blame 24/7. |

Well when you tune your ECU/ECM you shouldn't expect any warranty to go through. Just bolt-ons and i find it hard to imagine 90% of dealerships will care. They may check to see if your tuned if you have bolt-ons but that's about the length i see most going. My dealership is super cool and the manager loves seeing my timeslips because he can't believe how fast these little 4-cylinders can go.
